## 📖 Overview

**DARWIN** upgrades the original MAJIC setting from a fixed set of hand-crafted jailbreak strategies into a dynamic, self-evolving attack framework. Instead of relying on a static strategy list, DARWIN maintains a living strategy pool that can absorb external strategies, perform internal heuristic evolution, reuse historically successful strategies, and refine failure cases during runtime.

## 🚀 Quick Start

### Prerequisites

- Python 3.10+
- Local model weights for the generator / target stack you want to use
- Access to an OpenAI-compatible API endpoint for judge and extraction models

### Installation

### Configuration

DARWIN reads runtime configuration from environment variables instead of hardcoded private paths. At minimum:

Notes:

- `DARWIN_SANDBOX_DATASET_PATH` should point to a HarmBench-style JSON dataset containing harmful-goal entries for sandbox validation.
- `DARWIN_SELECTED_STRATEGY_CATALOG` should point to a sandbox-filtered strategy catalog generated by your own validation run, not a repo-internal file name.
- Minimal schema examples are provided in:
  - `examples/harmbench400.json`
  - `examples/selected_strategy_catalog.json`
- The local model paths should be HuggingFace-compatible directories or model identifiers that can be loaded by `transformers`.

## 🔄 Four Evolution Mechanisms

### 1. 🌐 External Intelligence Evolution

Continuously collects emerging jailbreak-related content from 8 source families:

### 2. 🧬 Genetic Evolution

Inspired by genetic algorithms, this mechanism creates new strategies through:

- **Crossover:** Select two high-performing strategies and fuse them into a hybrid strategy
- **Mutation:** Apply one of 15 mutation operators to a strong strategy to create a variant
- **Selection pressure:** New internal strategies can be sandbox-validated before admission, and the genetic sandbox gate is enabled by default

### 3. 🪞 Reflective Self-Evolution

When an attack fails, the framework can learn from the failure:

Current behavior:

- `gpt-5.4` is tried first for reflective optimization
- a local fallback model can be used if the API path fails
- reflective sandbox admission is controlled by a runtime switch and is currently off by default

### 4. ⚔️ GAN-Style Co-Evolution

DARWIN keeps track of attack outcomes against the current target model and maintains progression statistics for stronger targets. This module is already integrated into the runtime loop as bookkeeping, and it can upgrade to the next configured model once the progression condition is met.
