# A simple example of VK_NVX_binary_import and VK_NVX_image_view_handle

`VK_NVX_binary_import` and `VK_NVX_image_view_handle` are used by DXVK, DXVK-NvAPI and the DLSS runtime components (`nvngx.dll`, et al from `/usr/lib/nvidia/wine/`) to implement DLSS under Proton.

In a dark past, there was no simple sample for `VK_NVX_binary_import` and `VK_NVX_image_view_handle` out there, but there is now!

`VK_NVX_binary_import` is essentially just a tool for launching a function from a Cubin with a set of given parameters.

This sample draws a frog on top of a triangle render in Vulkan via a launched Cubin.
It is a simple example on how to both sample and write to Vulkan images from a launched Cubin.

Some things to note:

- A cudaSurfaceObject_t corresponds to a VkImageViewHandleInfoNVX::descriptorType of STORAGE_IMAGE

- A cudaTextureObject_t corresponds to a VkImageViewHandleInfoNVX::descriptorType of COMBINED_IMAGE_SAMPLER
    - The spec says one can pass SAMPLED_IMAGE as descriptor type here. There might be ways one can use a SAMPLED_IMAGE descriptor for operations on a cudaTextureObject_t that do not involve sampling... But I actually couldn't find any? This might only be useful with PTX assembly on the handle. (ie. if you are getting an image's size or texelFetch'ing?)

- I could not get `nvcc` to generate `sust.p` (formatted surface write) instruction, only `sust.d` (unformatted). I manually wrote some inline PTX assembly in the Cuda shader to write to the output surface correctly.
    - It seems `sust.d` is not supported for imported storage VkImage writes.

The expected output should look like this:
