# Docker Guide for AI Model Development and Deployment

This repo is divided into two parts:
1. The theoretical concept of the `Docker` and
2. [Examples](docker-examples/README.md) to get started with `Docker`.

The following is theoretical concepts of the `Docker` with hands-ons commands.

## Chapter 1: Understanding Docker Containers

### 1.1 What are Docker Containers?
Docker containers are lightweight, standalone, executable packages that include everything needed to run a piece of software, including the code, runtime, system tools, system libraries, and settings. Containers are isolated from each other and the host system, yet they share the OS kernel of the host machine, which makes them more efficient than traditional virtual machines.

### 1.2 What is the difference between a container and VM?

Containers and virtual machines have similar resource isolation and allocation benefits, but function differently because containers virtualize the operating system instead of hardware. Containers are more portable and efficient.

Containers are an abstraction at the app layer that packages code and dependencies together. Multiple containers can run on the same machine and share the OS kernel with other containers, each running as isolated processes in user space. Containers take up less space than VMs (container images are typically tens of MBs in size), can handle more applications and require fewer VMs and Operating systems.

Virtual machines (VMs) are an abstraction of physical hardware turning one server into many servers. The hypervisor allows multiple VMs to run on a single machine. Each VM includes a full copy of an operating system, the application, necessary binaries and libraries – taking up tens of GBs. VMs can also be slow to boot.

### 1.3 Benefits of Docker Containers in AI
- **Reproducibility**: Docker ensures that AI models and applications run the same way regardless of where they are deployed.
- **Isolation**: Different AI projects can run in separate containers without interfering with each other.

### 1.3 How Docker Containers Work
- **Images and Containers**: A Docker image is a lightweight, standalone, and executable software package that includes everything needed to run an application. When an image is run, it becomes a container.
- **Docker Engine**: The Docker Engine is a client-server application with a server that is a type of long-running program called a daemon process, a REST API which specifies interfaces that programs can use to talk to and instruct the Docker daemon, and a command-line interface (CLI) client.

    At the end you should see the output like this:

To generate this message, Docker took the following steps:
    1. The Docker client contacted the Docker daemon.
    2. The Docker daemon pulled the "hello-world" image from the Docker Hub.
        (amd64)
    3. The Docker daemon created a new container from that image which runs the
        executable that produces the output you are currently reading.
    4. The Docker daemon streamed that output to the Docker client, which sent it
        to your terminal.

[Docker Desktop for Mac](https://docs.docker.com/desktop/install/mac-install/) is available and similar to the Windows installation. Download the installer from Docker's website and drag the Docker icon to the Applications folder.

### 2.2 Verifying Installation
After installation, verify Docker installation:
