# The Dream Cycle: A Framework for Autonomous Agent Self-Improvement

> How an AI agent scans for breakthroughs, reflects on its own performance, and stages its own improvements — every night.

## What is this?

The Dream Cycle is a structured framework for autonomous AI agents to improve themselves over time. Instead of waiting for humans to notice drift, stagnation, or missed opportunities, the agent proactively:

1. **Scans** the research landscape — papers, open-source tools, community discussions — and scores each item for relevance
2. **Synthesizes** the top findings into actionable patterns, potential improvements, and capability gaps
3. **Reflects** on its own performance with grounded, citation-backed assessments (not vibes)
4. **Proposes** concrete, falsifiable improvements with hypotheses, rollback plans, and measure-by dates
5. **Governs** what it can implement autonomously vs. what requires human review

This is not a chatbot enhancement loop. It's a production-grade self-improvement system for agents running continuously in high-stakes environments.

We designed this system over the course of a month and have been running it in production for several weeks. It was built for an agent managing real workloads — scheduling, research, content production, external communications. This repository documents the architecture, reasoning, and lessons learned so far.

## Why "dream"?

The metaphor is more than aesthetic.

Human sleep does something computationally profound: it consolidates the day's experiences into durable memory, prunes low-value connections, integrates new patterns with existing knowledge, and surfaces novel associations that direct waking cognition couldn't produce. Dreams aren't idle noise — they're the brain's internal processing mode, uncoupled from immediate external demands.

An AI agent's equivalent is the gap between operational cycles: the moment when the agent isn't serving requests but could be scanning the horizon, processing what happened, and reorganizing its own capabilities.

Most agents don't use this gap. The Dream Cycle does.

Like biological sleep:
- **Scanning phase** ≈ REM pattern integration: new external inputs are compared against existing knowledge
- **Reflection phase** ≈ memory consolidation: what happened this week gets encoded as persistent patterns, not lost to context decay
- **Proposal phase** ≈ synaptic pruning: identify what's working and what's noise; propose targeted changes

The result: an agent that gets measurably better over time, not through random updates, but through structured evidence-based self-modification.

## Architecture Overview

The Dream Cycle operates in two modes:

**Nightly Mode**: Broad scanning of the research landscape. Agent surveys academic papers, trending open-source tools, community discussions, and AI lab announcements. Each item is scored on a relevance rubric. Top-scoring items receive deep extraction.

**Weekly Mode**: Structured self-reflection. Agent reviews the week's scans, assesses what worked and failed in its own performance, identifies the highest-leverage improvement, and stages a formal proposal.

## Quick Start

This framework is conceptual and adaptable. To implement the Dream Cycle for your own agent:

### 1. Define your relevance rubric
What makes a research finding relevant to your agent? Relevance scoring prevents noise from dominating. Start with 4–5 dimensions weighted to your domain. See [docs/evaluation-criteria.md](docs/evaluation-criteria.md) for the rubric we use.

### 2. Choose your scan sources
Pick 3–5 sources your agent should monitor regularly. Cover different signal types: academic (new theory), community (practical patterns), and commercial (what's shipping). See [docs/scan-strategy.md](docs/scan-strategy.md).

### 3. Implement structured reflection
The hardest part. Most agents self-assess with "I think I did well." That's noise. Replace it with grounded questions that require citations. See [docs/reflection-prompts.md](docs/reflection-prompts.md).

### 4. Build governance before you build autonomy
This is not optional. Define what your agent can change unilaterally, what requires documented evidence, what requires peer review, and what requires human approval — before it starts modifying itself. See [docs/self-modification-governance.md](docs/self-modification-governance.md).

### 5. Design for rollback
