# The Bau Programming Language

Bau is an open-source programming language
that is simple, concise, fast, and memory safe.
Try it in the <a href="https://thomasmueller.github.io/bau-lang/">Playground</a>.

* 2026-06-24: Modules can have initialization code. Cycles in the imports are detected and disallowed.

### Constants, Variables

Identifiers contain letters, digits, and `_`.
`:` defines a constant.
`:=` defines a variable. `=` `+=` `-=` `*=`
`/=` `&=` `|=` `^=` `<<=` `>>=` updates it:

PI : 3.14159
    x := 10
    x += 1    # shortcut for x = x + 1

Variables need to be defined before they are used.
Variables without value require a type:

x int

A list of variables can be declared and initialized.
Here, zero is assigned to both variables:

x, y := 0

Variables outside of functions (without indentation) are global.
Names of global constants need to be capitalized,
and global variables may not be imported.
Global variables and constants may not be shadowed.

### Built-In Types

The built-in types are `int` `i32` `i16` `i8` (signed integer),
and `float` `f32` (floating point).
Defaults are `int` and `float`; both are 64-bit.
`int` can be restricted to a range using `0..n`.
Conversion functions change the type, and may truncate.

### Conditions

`if` starts a condition.
Spaces group statements into blocks.
`elif` (else if) and `else` are optional.
At expression level, `==` compares values.

if a == 0
        println('zero')
    elif a == 1
        println('one')
    else
        println('many')

Non-zero numbers are considered true,
and zero is considered false.
For references, `null` is considered false,
and not `null` is considered true.

        println('a is not zero')

### Loops

`for` and `loop` are supported.
`loop` without a condition is endless.

# loop from 0 to 9
    for i := range(0, 10)
        println(i)

`for` is internally converted to `loop`.

i := 0
    loop i < 10
        println(i)
        i += 1

<a href="docsrc/macros.md#implementing-for-loop-functions">Custom `for` loops</a>, are supported.
`break` exits a loop. `continue` restarts.
They may have a condition:

# prints 1 to 4
    for i := range(1, 10)

### Comments

`#` starts a line comment.

Two or more `#` start and end a block comment.

converted to documentation.

### Literals

Numbers start with a digit. `_` is ignored.
`.` is floating point, `0x` hexadecimal.

Strings starting with `'` 
may contain `\n` newline, `\r` return, `\t` tab, 
`\'` single quote,  `\\` backslash, `\x00` byte. 
UTF-8 is used.
Raw strings don't have escapes 
and start and end with one or more `` ` ``.
Multi-line ones begin on the next line 
and may be indented.

        Two-line

### Optional Commas

Commas are optional if expressions are simple.
There is no string interpolation.

println('Hello ' name '!')
    
If expressions are complex, then `,` or `()` are needed:

println('Time: ' (millis / 1000) ' seconds')

### Operators

`==` `<` `>` `<=` `>=` `<>` compare two values and return `1` or `0`.
`not` inverts a comparison. `and` `or` combine comparisons;
the right side is only evaluated when needed.
Integer `+` `-` `*` wrap around on over- / underflow.
Possible integer division by 0 is detected at compile time.
`&` `|` `^` `~` `<<` `>>` are bitwise and, or, xor, not, 
shift left, and logical shift right: the leftmost bits become `0`.
For arithmetic shift right, unsigned division, and other operations,
use the standard library, e.g. `org.bau.Math` and `org.bau.BigInt`.
For floating point operations, the IEEE 754 standard is used.

The operator precedence is:

* `or`
* `and`
* `==` `<>` `<=` `>=` `<` `>`
* `^` `&` `|`
* `<<` `>>`
* `+` `-`
* `*` `/` `%`

### Functions

A program starts with a `main` function.
If `main` is not defined, top-level statements 
(outside any function) are executed instead.

`fun` starts a function. It may `return` a value.
`..` means variable number of arguments.
Functions can share a name if the number of arguments is different.
They can be declared first and implemented later.
`const` functions are executed at compile time
if the arguments are constants.

fun square(x int) int
        return x * x

fun sum(x int..) const int
        sum := 0
        for i := until(x.len)
            sum += x[i]
        return sum

println('sum: ' sum(1, 2, 3))
    for i := until(5)
        println(square(i))

### Template Functions

Types can be passed as parameters, or implicitly.
Template type names use capital letters only (for example, `T`).
Internally, these functions are templates.

        a : arrayOf(i8, 0, 1, 2, 3)
        b : array(0, 1, 2, 3)

fun arrayOf(T type, entries T..) T[]
        return entries

fun array(entries T..) T[]
        return entries

The name of the type is available using `T.name`,
the field count using `T.fieldCount`,
the comma separated field names using `T.fieldNames`,
and the comma separated field names using `T.fieldTypes`.

### Macro Functions

`macro` function calls are replaced at compile time
with the implementation,
and so parameters are only evaluated when needed:

        if cond
            return a
        else
            return b

text : 'Hello'
    for i := until(10)
        println(when(i < text.len, text[i], 0))

The source code of the first parameter is available using `.source`. 
The AST (abstract syntax tree) is available using `.ast`,
and the bound values using `.values`.

fun macro assert(x int)
        if not x
            println('assertion failed: ' x.source)

for i := until(10)
        assert(i < 5)

Macro functions on types can be called with an `it` argument.
It is replaced at compile time:

        list : int[end - start]
        for i := until(end - start)
            list[i] = i + start

    fun macro int[].map(value int) int[]
        result : int[this.len]
        i := 0
        while i < this.len
            it : this[i]
            result[i] = value
            i += 1

# calculate the squares of 0..9
    m : range(0, 10).map(it * it)

### Array Access

To create a new array and then access it, use:

data : i8[3]
    data[0] = 10

The maximum array length is `1 << 31`.
Bounds are checked where needed.
Access without runtime checks requires that the compiler verifies correctness.
Index variables with range restrictions allow this:
`i := 0 .. data.len` defines a integer with the provided range,
and initalized it with zero.
For performance-critical code, use `[..]!` to ensure
no runtime checks are done.
The conditional `break` guarantees that `i` is within the bounds.

if data.len
        i := 0 .. data.len
        loop
            data[i]! = i
            next : i + 1
            break next >= data.len
            i = next

### Types

Types can have fields and functions:

type Square
        length int

fun Square.area() int
        return length * length

s : Square()
    a : s.area()

Types that start with lowercase are copied when assigned.
They are called "value types" 
(in other languages sometimes called struct types).
One such example is `int`.

Types that start with uppercase are referenced when assigned.
They are called "reference types" 
(in other languages sometimes called object types, or classes).
If a reference type has a `close()` function, then it is called
before the memory is freed.

For each type, a constructor is automatically added
with the non-nullable fields, and one with all fields.

Functions on built-in types, and arrays, are allowed.
Functions on foreign types are only visible within
the module where they are defined.

fun int.square() int
        return this * this

println(12.square())

### Enums

Enums simplify defining unique constants.
The first value starts with 0.

enum weekday
        sunday
        monday
        tuesday
        wednesday
        thursday
        friday
        saturday
        
    for a := until(weekday.saturday + 1)
        switch a
        case weekday.sunday
            println('sunday')
        case weekday.monday
            println('monday')
        else
            println('some other day: #' a)

Values can be set:

enum month
        january: 1
        february
        march

Entries may have gaps.

### Template Types

Types can have parameters. Such types are called templates:

type List(T)
        array T[]
        size int

The following `List(T, T[0])` is the constructor
of `List(T)`, with an empty array of `T` as parameter.

fun newList(T type) List(T)
        return List(T, T[0])

intList := newList(int)
    squareList := newList(Square)

### Null

`?` means it may be `null`. 
An explicit check is required before using the value.
There are no null pointer errors at runtime.

fun get(key int) Circle?
        # may return null

v : get(key) 
    if v
        print(v.area())

For value types and numbers, `null` means zero.

### Division by Zero

An explicit check for zero is required before integer `/` and `%`.
Division by zero is not possible at runtime.

# does not compile
    fun average(sum int, count int) int
        return sum / count

# does compile
    fun average(sum int, count int) int
        if count == 0
            return 0
        return sum / count

### Memory Management

Reference types are reference counted by default.
To avoid cycles, explicitly set fields to `null`
(there is no garbage collection).

Where speed is critical, use single ownership,
by adding `owned` to the type and trait declarations,
and borrow with `&`.

            result += r.nodeCount()
        return result

### Modules and Import

`import` allows using types and functions from a module.
Import statements need to be at the start of the file.
The last part of the module name is the module identifier (for example `Math` below),
which is used to access all types, functions, or constants in this module.
The module identifier maybe be renamed (`AcmeMath` below) to resolve conflicts.
Symbols of a module may be listed explicitly (`random`);
the module identifier may then be omitted on usage:

import com.acme.Math: AcmeMath
    import org.bau.Math
    import org.bau.Utils
        random

println(Math.PI)
    println(Utils.getNanoTime())
    println(random())
    println(Math.sqrt(2))
    println(AcmeMath.sqrt(2))

The module name must match the file path.
For example, the module `com.acme.Math` refers to a file named `Math.bau`
in the directory `com/acme`.
Cycles in the imported file are not allows, to simplify initialization.

### Exceptions

`throw` throws an exception. `catch` is needed,
or the function needs `throws`.
Custom exception types are allowed.
Unlike in other languages, there is no explicit 
`try`: the scope of `catch` is the preceding block.

### Custom Loops

Libraries and users can define their own `for` loops using user-defined functions.
There are two built-in loop functions: `until` and `range`.
Such functions work like macros, as they are expanded at compile time.
The loop is replaced during compilation with the function body.
The variable `_` represents the current iteration value.
The `return _` statement is replaced during compilation with the loop body.

fun main()
        for x := evenRange(0, 30)
            println('even: ' x)

fun for evenRange(from int, to int) int
        _ := from
        loop _ < to
            return _
            _ += 2

is equivalent to:

fun main()
        x := 0
        loop x < 30
            println('even: ' x)
            x += 2

### Function Pointers

Function pointers are variables that point to a function.
They allow to call a function indirectly,
which is useful for callbacks.
The syntax for function pointers matches the function declaration, 
where the name of the function is replaced with `fun` and the
parameter names are removed. Example:

fun log(x int)
        println('value is ' x)

fun count(to int, callback fun(int))
        for i := until(to)
            callback(i)

count(5, log)

### Traits

Traits (in other languages called interfaces, mixins, or prototypes)
contain a list of functions.

trait Reader
        read() int
        size() int

Types that implement a trait needs to declares all trait functions
if the trait does not have a default implementation.

fun Reader.size() int
        return -1

type Memory : Reader
        array int[]
        pos int
    
    fun Memory.read() int
        x : array[pos]
        pos += 1
        return x
    
Traits can require other traits; such traits inherit the functions
of the required traits.

trait Writer : Reader
        write(x int)

Types can implement multiple traits, 
and multiple types can implement the same trait.
