This repo aims to guide you through the setup of a macOS Sonoma 14.3 virtual machine. We'll deploy it using KVM and QEMU under an UNRAID server.

# macOS Sonoma 14.3 VM on UNRAID
This repo aims to guide you threw the setup of a macOS (Sonoma 14.3) virtual machine. We'll deploy it using [KVM](https://www.redhat.com/en/topics/virtualization/what-is-KVM) and [QEMU](https://www.qemu.org) under an [UNRAID](https://unraid.net) server.

# Prerequisites

* A macOS machine to create the installation media

* Check your components compatibility with macOS. You can use [this](https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Install-Guide/macos-limits.html) guide to check it.

* I strongly recommend to use a dedicated PCIe USB controller to pass USB devices to the VM. I didn't manage to pass any of mine without it. [This](https://amzn.to/3wi4Stb) is the one I use. It worked out of the box.

* Patience. This is not a simple process and it will take some time to get it working.

# GPU compatibility

Once your VM will be up and running, you'll need to pass a GPU to it. Since macOS stopped supporting NVIDIA GPUs, I strongly recommend to use an AMD one (some NVIDIA might do the job, like GT 710, but you'll probably face the need of some extra settings that I will not cover here). You can use any AMD GPU, but I suggest using a Polaris or Navi one, since they are natively supported by macOS.

# UNRAID setup

First of all, you'll need to have an UNRAID server up and running. If you don't have one, you can follow [this](https://docs.unraid.net/unraid-os/getting-started/quick-install-guide/) guide to set it up.

I will not cover the setup of the UNRAID server here. For any UNRAID related questions, you can check the [official documentation](https://wiki.unraid.net/Main_Page). I also recommend to join the [UNRAID forums](https://forums.unraid.net) and the [UNRAID subreddit](https://www.reddit.com/r/unRAID/). Above all, here's probably the best YouTube channel to learn about UNRAID: [Spaceinvader One](https://www.youtube.com/c/SpaceinvaderOne).

You'll need to have the [User Scripts](https://forums.unraid.net/topic/48286-plugin-ca-user-scripts/) and [vm_custom_icons](https://github.com/SpaceinvaderOne/unraid_vm_icons) plugins installed

# Create macOS installation media

* ## Download macOS installer

* Get [gibMacOS](https://github.com/corpnewt/gibMacOS) : `git clone https://github.com/corpnewt/gibMacOS.git`

* In the cloned repo, run `gibMacOS.command` and select the macOS version you want to download (Sonoma in this case).

* Run the downloaded `InstallAssistant.pkg` and follow the instructions.

* ## Create the bootable `.img` file

* On a macOS machine, open Disk Utility
	* Click `File` > `New Image` > `Blank Image`
	* Set the following settings:
		* **Save as**: macOS
		* **Name**: macOS
		* **Size**: 16384 Mo
		* **Format**: Mac OS Extended (Journaled)
	* Click `Save`
	* In terminal, run `sudo /Applications/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma.app/Contents/Resources/createinstallmedia --volume /Volumes/macOS --nointeraction`
	* Once the process is done, run: `hdutil detach --force /Volumes/Install\ macOS\ Sonoma`
	* Convert the disk image to a `.cdr` file: `hdiutil convert /PATH/TO/macOS.dmg -format UDTO -o ~/Desktop/macOS.cdr` (replace `/PATH/TO/macOS.dmg` with the path to your `.dmg` file)
	* Rename the `.cdr` file to `.img`: `mv ~/Desktop/macOS.cdr ~/Desktop/macOS.img`

* ## Copy the `.img` file to UNRAID

There are many ways to do this, here is how to do it using a Python http server

* On your macOS machine, run `python3 -m http.server 8000` in the directory where the `.img` file is located
	* Open an SSH session to your UNRAID server, or use the terminal in the web interface
	* Run `curl -o /PATH/TO/YOUR/UNRAID/ISOS/DIRECTORY http://YOUR_MACOS_IP:8000/macOS.img` (replace `YOUR_MACOS_IP` with your macOS machine IP and `/PATH/TO/YOUR/UNRAID/ISOS/DIRECTORY` with the path to your UNRAID ISOs directory)

# Get KVM-OpenCore image

* On [this](https://github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Opencore) repo, [download](https://github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Opencore/releases/download/v20/OpenCore-v20.iso.gz) the `KVM-OpenCore` image
* Extract the `.gz` file: `gzip -d OpenCore-v20.iso.gz`
* Change the name of the `.iso` file to `OpenCore.img`: `mv OpenCore-v20.iso OpenCore.img`
* Copy the `.img` file to your UNRAID ISOs directory (you can use the same method as for the macOS `.img` file)

# macOS VM setup

* ## Create a macOS VM

* Go to UNRAID web interface, in `APPS` tab, and search for "macinabox".

* Set the following settings:
		* **Network Type** : Bridge
		* **Console shell command** : Shell
		* **Privileged** : On
		* **Operating System Version** : Monterey
		* **Install Type** : Auto install
		* **Vdisk Size** : 100G *(At least)*
		* **Vdisk Type** : raw
		* **Opencore stock or custom** : stock
		* **Delete and replace Opencore** : no
		* **Override default NIC type** : vmxnet3
		* **VM Images Location** : *PATH TO YOUR VMs LOCATION ON UNRAID (if you left it as default, it should be in `/mnt/user/domains`)*
		* **Isos Share Location** : *PATH TO YOUR ISOs LOCATION ON UNRAID (if you left it as default, it should be in `/mnt/user/isos`)*
		* **appdata** : *`$(PATH TO YOUR APPDATA LOCATION ON UNRAID)/macinabox` (if you left it as default, it should be in `/mnt/user/appdata/macinabox`)*

* Click `Apply`

* On UNRAID web interface, go to `Settings` tab > `User Scripts` and run in background `1_macinabox_vmready_notify`

* Once the notification appears, run `1_macinabox_helper`

* Once the process is done, go to `VMS` tab. **DO NOT START THE VM YET**.

* ## Edit the VM's XML

The `1_macinabox_helper` script created the VM. It also fixed its XML. From now on, we'll NEVER USE IT AGAIN, since it will overwrite the XML with the wrong settings. Also, we will NEVER USE THE GUI TO EDIT THE VM's SETTINGS, since it will also overwrite the XML with the wrong settings.

So, to edit the VM's settings, we'll need to edit the XML directly. In the `VMS` tab, click on the VM's icon, then click `Edit`. In top right corner, click `XML VIEW`.

For now, make the following changes **ONLY** :
	* Change path to the Opencore image to where you stored the one you downloaded [earlier](#get-kvm-opencore-image)
	* Change path to the macOS image to where you stored the one you downloaded [earlier](#copy-the-img-file-to-unraid)
	* Depending on your CPU, add the [according]() qemu command line arguments. I am using an Intel® Core™ i7-10700K, so I added the following arguments *(add it at the end of the `<domain>` section)*:
		```xml

		</qemu:commandline>
		```

* Click `Update`

* ## Install macOS

* Start the VM
	* Open VNC remote viewer
	* Select `UEFI Shell`
	* Run `System\Library\CoreServices\boot.efi`
	* You should be now in the Recovery mode
	* Open Disk Utility
	* Select the disk you want to install macOS on
	* Click `Erase` and set the following settings:
		* **Name** : Sonoma
		* **Format** : APFS
		* **Scheme** : GUID Partition Map
	* Click `Erase`
	* Close Disk Utility
	* Select `Install macOS Sonoma`
	* Click `Continue`

From now on, the installation process should be pretty straightforward. The VM will reboot a few times. You need to select the `macOS Installer` every time it reboots, as long as it appears. At some point, you'll see the disk you previously named `Sonoma`, and you'll so have to boot on it from then on.

Once the installation process is done, follow the instructions to set up the system. **DO NOT LOG IN WITH YOUR APPLE ID**. We'll do it later.

* ## EFI setup

Once you are on the desktop, open Safari and download the [OpenCore Configurator](https://mackie100projects.altervista.org/download-opencore-configurator/). Drag and drop it to the Applications folder. Since it's not signed, you'll need to open the app a first time, resulting in a warning message. Go to `System Preferences` > `Security & Privacy` and click `Open Anyway`.

I strongly recommend to upgrade OpenCore at this point. I will not cover the process here, but you can find a guide on how to do it [here](https://dortania.github.io/OpenCore-Post-Install/universal/update.html).

Once the app is open, click the `Tools` > `Mount EFI`. Select the disk where you installed macOS and click `Mount Partition`. Once the partition is mounted, click `Open Partition`. Keep the window open.

On the [repo](https://github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Opencore) we used [before](#get-kvm-opencore-image) to download the `OpenCore.img` file, [download](https://github.com/thenickdude/KVM-Opencore/releases/download/v20/OpenCoreEFIFolder-v20.zip) the `OpenCoreEFIFolder.zip` file. Extract it and open the `EFI` folder. Drag and drop the `EFI` folder to the `EFI` partition you previously opened.

Then, in Opencore Configurator, go in `PlatformInfo` tab. On the second block, select a Mac model that is compatible with macOS Sonoma. I selected *iMac Retina 5K from 2020*. Then click `Check Coverage`. The serial number must **NOT** be valid. If it is, click `Generate` until it's not.

If you are using a NAVI AMD GPU, you'll need to add the following argument to the `NVRAM` > `Add` section in the 3rd block:

agdpmod=pikera
```

At this point, I strongly recommend to shut the system down and make a backup of the VM's folder and its XML. Doing so, you'll be able to restore the VM to this state if anything goes wrong. The XML file can be found in `/etc/libvirt/qemu/` and the VM's folder in your VMs location on UNRAID.

# Post-installation

## Remove the installation disks

Once you are done with the installation, you'll need to remove the installation disks from the VM's XML.

* Replace the path of the firstly appearing disk (`OpenCore.img`) with the path of the VM's vdisk
* Remove the secondly appearing disk
* Remove the thirdly appearing disk

## Devices passthrough

We'll now be able to:
* Add more CPU cores and RAM to the VM
* Pass the GPU
* Pass USB devices

In the following sections, I will provide you XML lines that reffers to my hardware. You'll need to change the values to match your hardware. Here is the output of `lspci -nn` on my UNRAID server:

### Add more CPU cores and RAM to the VM

To do so, we'll edit the VM's XML. Here is how mine looks like after passing 8 cores and 16 threads and 16GB of RAM:

### Pass the GPU

Do not forget to unbind the GPU from the host before passing it to the VM. You can do so by adding this line to the `/boot/syslinux/syslinux.cfg` file under `label Unraid OS` on your UNRAID server:

```bash
append vfio-pci.ids=1002:73bf,1002:ab28 pcie_acs_override=multifunction video=efifb:off initrd=/bzroot
```

You'll need to replace `1002:73bf` and `1002:ab28` with the IDs of your GPU. You can find them by running `lspci -nn` in the terminal of your UNRAID server. The first ID is the GPU's ID and the second one is the audio device's ID.

I strongly recommend to dump the vBIOS of your GPU. You can do so following [this](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FWn6OCWl63o&t=304s) guide.

Once you have the vBIOS, you can pass the GPU to the VM. Here is how my XML looks like after passing my RX 6800:

Change the rom file's path to the path where you stored the vBIOS, and the `address` fields to the IDs of your GPU (you can find them by running `lspci -nn` in the terminal of your UNRAID server).

### Pass USB devices

As I said in the prerequisites, I strongly recommend to use a dedicated PCIe USB controller to pass USB devices. Here is how my XML looks like after passing my USB controller:

Again, you'll need to change the `address` fields to the IDs of your USB controller.

You can follow this process to pass any other device to the VM. I added a PCIe soundcard the same way I added the USB controller. [This](https://amzn.to/49H47rR) model is working out of the box.

## Reset NVRAM

At this point, you should have reached the end of the entire process of setting up the VM. You'll need to reset the NVRAM at least twice. You can do so by selecting `Reset NVRAM` in the boot menu when you start the VM.

## Skip boot picker

If everything is working as expected, you can skip the boot picker by doing so:

* Open OpenCore Configurator
* Go to `Misc` tab
* In the `Boot` section, set `ShowPicker` to `False`

# Troubleshooting

Since the process of installing macOS on non Apple hardware may vary a lot depending on your hardware, you may face some issues. Do not hesitate to ask for help on related forums, Discord servers, etc. The community is very helpful and you'll probably find someone who faced the same issue as you.
