# 🧠 Strix Halo GPU Passthrough on Proxmox 9 (AI Max+ 395)

This guide walks through setting up GPU passthrough for AMD Strix Halo (AI Max+ 395) on Proxmox VE 9.x. It includes ROM injection, IOMMU isolation, and full VM configuration for Windows 11 guests.

Tested on: **GMKtec Evo-X2**  
Applies to: **Any system with AMD Ryzen AI Max+ 395 (Strix Halo)**

⚠️ **Note**: GPU passthrough may stop working if the VM is rebooted. A full Proxmox host reboot is required to restore functionality.

## ⚙️ BIOS Prerequisite

Before making any OS-level changes, **enter your system BIOS/UEFI** and ensure the following are enabled:

- **IOMMU** or **AMD-Vi**  
- **SVM (Secure Virtual Machine)**  
- **UEFI Boot Mode**

These settings are typically found under *Advanced → CPU Configuration* or *Chipset → IOMMU*. Save and reboot before proceeding.

## 🛠️ Step-by-Step Setup

### 1. Enable IOMMU in GRUB

Edit `/etc/default/grub`:

GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet amd_iommu=on iommu=pt initcall_blacklist=sysfb_init"
```

Update GRUB:

```bash
update-grub
```

### 2. Bind GPU to VFIO

Create `/etc/modeprobe.d/vfio.conf`:

```bash
options vfio-pci ids=1002:1586,1002:1640,1022:15e3 disable_vga=1
```

### 3. Blacklist Host Drivers

Edit `/etc/modeprobe.d/blacklist.conf`:

```bash
blacklist amdgpu
blacklist radeon
blacklist snd_hda_intel
```

### 4. Update Initramfs and Reboot

```bash
update-initramfs -u -k all
reboot
```

---

### 5. Verify VFIO Binding

```bash
dmesg | grep -i vfio
```

Look for lines indicating the GPU and audio devices are bound to vfio-pci

---

### 6. Confirm IOMMU Isolation

```bash
find /sys/kernel/iommu_groups/ -type l
```

### 7. VM Configuration Example

Edit your Proxmox VM config at `/etc/pve/qemu-server/<VMID>.conf.

⚠️ **Important**: You must pass through all three devices:  
- GPU (c6:00.0)  
- GPU audio (c6:00.1)  
- HD Audio (c6:00.6)

`cpu:host` is needed to avoid error 43 on the device in Windows

### 🧪 Validation

`dmesg | grep -i amd`

and

`dmesg | grep -i vfio`

Confirms:
- IOMMU initialized
- Nested virtualization enabled
- AMD-Vi interrupt remapping active

### 8. Install Windows and Drivers

Use a Windows 11 ISO. After installation, install VirtIO drivers from `virtio-win` ISO.

Then download AMD drivers specifically for the Ryzen AI Max+ 395 from:

Other driver packages will fail.

### Verify Audio and GPU

In Windows:

- Open Device Manager → GPU should show correctly without Code 43.  
- Audio devices should appear in the Volume Mixer.  
- If missing, verify `c6:00.6` is passed through.

Test playback to confirm functionality.

## Notes

- If you reboot the VM, passthrough will usually break until you reboot the Proxmox host.  
- This guide was tested on GMKtec Evo-X2 with Strix Halo 8060S GPU, but should apply to other Ryzen AI Max+ 395 systems.
