Written by David Bau as a Javascript example in 2009; updated in 2020
to handle high device pixel ratios, show orbits, and calculate
periodicity. Updated again in 2024 to add double-double (DD) precision for zooms to 10^30.
Updated in 2025 to add GPU support and quad-double (QD) precision for zooms beyond 10^60.

This project is an experiment in
[vibe coding](https://davidbau.com/archives/2025/12/16/vibe_coding.html), using
LLM agents to build complexity beyond what a single human coder has time to understand.
The 2022 version was the last written without AI assistance; since then, the codebase
has grown from 779 to over 12,000 lines with the help of Claude.

URL parameter options: use `?grid=3` to select 3-column view,
                   `c=-0.14-0.65i` to set center,
               and `z=5.0` to set zoom level.

Implementation notes.  To minimize computation, the code identifies both
points that diverge and points that converge.  The algorithm can
identiify convergence to periodic cylces of arbitrarily long length.
Does a sparse computation, iterating only points that have not yet
diverged or converged to a cycle, and continues computation to an
infinite number of iterations to render crisp fractals over time.
