# TurboQuant — Local LLM on 8GB Mac

Implementation of **TurboQuant** (ICLR 2026, Google Research) for running
Llama 3 8B locally on Apple Silicon with 6x KV cache memory reduction.

## What This Does

Without TurboQuant, Llama 3 8B at 8K context needs ~1GB just for the KV cache.
At 32K context, that's ~4.3GB — eating most of your unified memory.

With 4-bit TurboQuant:

## Setup (Mac Apple Silicon)

### Step 1 — Install Ollama

```bash
# Download from https://ollama.com or via Homebrew:
brew install ollama

# Start the Ollama server
ollama serve
```

### Step 2 — Pull Llama 3 8B

```bash
# In a new terminal:
ollama pull llama3.1:8b

# Verify it's available:
ollama list
```

### Step 3 — Install Python dependencies

# Create a virtual environment (recommended)

source .venv/bin/activate

# Install dependencies

# PyTorch with MPS support (Apple Silicon)

### Step 4 — Run

That's it. With the Ollama backend, TurboQuant provides a chat interface
and projects memory savings. For **actual KV cache compression**, use the
HuggingFace backend (see below).

## Benchmark Results

> ⚠️ **Transparency note:** The numbers below are from the TurboQuant paper
> (Google Research, ICLR 2026) and from synthetic pipeline tests on random
> numpy vectors — NOT from running against a real LLM on this machine.
> To get real numbers on your hardware, run `python benchmark.py` (see below).

**From the paper** (Llama-3.1-8B-Instruct, LongBench):

## Understanding KV Cache Testing: Ollama vs HuggingFace

TurboQuant has two backend options: **Ollama** and **HuggingFace**. They offer very different levels of integration.

### Ollama Backend (Chat Only)
Ollama is a compiled standalone server built on top of `llama.cpp`. We interact with it via a REST API. Because it acts as a black box, **Ollama does not expose its raw KV cache tensors**.
* **What TurboQuant does:** Wraps the Ollama chat interface and tracks token counts to give you *theoretical projections* of how much memory TurboQuant would save if applied to the KV cache.
* **What TurboQuant cannot do:** Actually compress Ollama's internal KV cache. The memory savings are projections, not real compression. Ollama handles its own weight quantization (Q4_0, Q4_K_M, etc.) natively.
* **Benchmarking:** Running `benchmark.py --real` on Ollama will fall back to the synthetic test since we can't extract real KV tensors.

### HuggingFace Backend (Full KV Compression)
The HuggingFace backend is where TurboQuant **actually compresses the KV cache**.
* HuggingFace runs directly in Python, giving TurboQuant the ability to attach `forward_hooks` to every attention layer.
* Keys and Values are intercepted the instant they are computed, compressed in-place using the two-stage pipeline (TurboQuantMSE + QJL), and decompressed transparently before attention score calculation.
* This is real, measurable compression — run `/stats` during chat to see live memory reduction.

For chatting on Apple Silicon, Ollama gives you great out-of-the-box performance. For **verifiable KV cache compression** and benchmarking, use the HuggingFace backend.

These models run comfortably in 8GB unified memory thanks to
Ollama's built-in weight quantization. For actual TurboQuant KV
cache compression, use the HuggingFace backend with a model
that fits in your GPU memory.
