# Meteor HRPT Live Decoder

A lightweight Windows tool that decodes **Meteor-M HRPT** data **in real time** and
paints the image line-by-line as frames arrive. It takes a raw **CADU** stream
(either over UDP or from a `.cadu` file), extracts the **MSU-MR** frames, decodes
the 6 spectral channels (10-bit → 8-bit) and displays a live, scrolling composite.

Built with C# / WinForms (.NET 6).

## Features

- **Two input modes**
  - **Network (UDP):** receives a live CADU stream (default port `5001`).
  - **File:** replays a `.cadu` file, or auto-picks the newest `*.cadu` in a folder.
- **Live decoding & display** — CADU → MSU-MR (11850-byte frames) → 6 channels (1572 px each), rendered as they arrive.
- **RGB composites** — ready-made presets plus a manual channel picker:
  - AVHRR 221 / 321 false colour
  - Thermal IR (ch5, inverted)
  - IR 543 / 345 false colour
  - RGB 123
  - Custom (pick R/G/B channels 1–6)
- **Optional CADU recording** — tick *Save CADU* to also write the incoming stream to disk. Files get a unique, timestamped name:
  ```

  Default location: `Documents\MeteorHRPT_CADU\`, or choose your own via *CADU folder…*.

> **Tip:** the live view is a quick preview. **If you want to fully decode the pass
  > afterwards in [SatDump](https://github.com/SatDump/SatDump)** (calibrated, geo-referenced,
  > all channels/composites), you **must tick _Save CADU_** — the saved `.cadu` file is
  > exactly what SatDump reprocesses. Without it, nothing is kept once you stop.

## Requirements

- **To run the release build:** Windows + the
  [.NET 6 Desktop Runtime](https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download/dotnet/6.0) (or newer).
  Grab the "Desktop Runtime" installer if the app won't start.
- **To build from source:** [.NET 6 SDK](https://dotnet.microsoft.com/download) (or newer).

## Build & run

Or open `MeteorHRPTLive.sln` in Visual Studio 2022 and press F5.

## Usage

1. Pick a **mode**:
   - **Network (UDP):** set the port (default `5001`) and press **Start**.
   - **File:** choose a `.cadu` file (or a folder — it auto-finds the newest one) and press **Start**.
2. Choose a **composite** (or *Custom* + R/G/B channels).
3. Tick **Save CADU** if you want to keep the recording — **required if you plan to
   fully decode the pass later in SatDump.** Leave it off for a preview-only session.
4. **Stop** ends the session; **Clean** clears the canvas and buffers.

### Later, in SatDump

Open the saved `MeteorHRPT_*.cadu` file in SatDump (Meteor HRPT pipeline, starting from
the CADU/frame level) to generate the full set of calibrated products and composites.

## Feeding it a CADU stream

The decoder expects standard **1024-byte Meteor HRPT CADU frames** (sync marker
`1A CF FC 1D`). It re-syncs on the marker, so packet boundaries don't matter.

A convenient source is **[SatDump](https://github.com/SatDump/SatDump)**, which can
stream the demodulated/deframed CADU over UDP.

### Ready-to-use SatDump pipeline

This repo ships a drop-in pipeline: [`satdump/MeteorHRPT_UDP.json`](satdump/MeteorHRPT_UDP.json).
It adds a **"METEOR HRPT (UDP stream)"** pipeline that streams CADU to `127.0.0.1:5001`
(1024-byte frames), matching this decoder's defaults.

1. Copy `satdump/MeteorHRPT_UDP.json` into SatDump's pipelines folder:
   ```
   <SatDump>/resources/pipelines/
   ```
   (on a built copy it's usually under `build/Release/resources/pipelines/` — use the
   one the running SatDump actually reads).
2. In SatDump, open the **Recorder**, tune to **1700 MHz**, pick pipeline
   **"METEOR HRPT (UDP stream)"**, and press **Start Processing**.
3. In this decoder: choose **Network (UDP)**, port **5001**, press **Start**.

> **Note:** this pipeline *only streams* CADU — SatDump itself won't decode/save it
> (its output stage is the UDP sender). Use this decoder's **Save CADU** to keep the
> recording, then reprocess that `.cadu` in SatDump for full products. To change the
> target host/port, edit `server_address` / `server_port` in the JSON.

The pipeline definition is adapted from SatDump's stock Meteor-M pipeline
(GPL-3.0) — see [Acknowledgements](#acknowledgements).
