**Getcito** is an open-source, self-hosted platform for tracking and optimizing your **AI visibility** — also known as:

- **AEO** — Answer Engine Optimization
- **GEO** — Generative Engine Optimization
- **LLMO** — LLM Optimization

Getcito tracks how AI answer engines (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Perplexity, Gemini, Copilot, Grok, and others) mention, cite, and describe your brand — so you can benchmark competitors and grow your presence in AI answers. Run it on your own infrastructure, own your data, and audit exactly how every metric is calculated.

It is a free alternative to hosted tools like Profound, Peec, and Otterly.

## Architecture Overview

Getcito is a pnpm/Turborepo monorepo of two apps backed by shared packages. The **web** app serves the dashboard and REST API; the **worker** runs scheduled scraping, analysis, and report jobs off a `pg-boss` queue in PostgreSQL. Scraper and LLM providers are called by the worker to collect AI answers.

## Installation

### Option A — Docker Compose (recommended)

Builds and runs the full stack (PostgreSQL, migrations, web, worker, Adminer) from source.

> **Watch** this repo's **releases** to get notified of major updates.

> [!IMPORTANT]
> Upgrading an existing Compose installation does not upgrade its database files. Set `POSTGRES_IMAGE_TAG=16-alpine` in `.env` before pulling this release. Move to PostgreSQL 18 only after dumping the PostgreSQL 16 database and restoring it into a fresh PostgreSQL 18 volume.

### Option B — Local development

Dev port: **web** → http://localhost:3000.
The **worker** loads env from `apps/web/.env` (via `--env-file`) and is only needed for background job processing.

## Configuration

Environment variables are the single source of truth. The canonical registry lives in `packages/config/src/env-registry.ts`; startup validation reports any missing **required** vars for the active `DEPLOYMENT_MODE`.

> Start from `.env.example` at the repo root and `apps/web/.env.example`. Because the worker reads `apps/web/.env` during `pnpm dev`, copy the app template there as shown above.

**Production (per app):** `pnpm build` emits a Nitro server bundle for `web`; start with `node .output/server/index.mjs` (see the app's `start` script). The worker runs via `tsx src/index.ts`.

## Database

- **PostgreSQL 16+**, accessed via **Drizzle ORM** (schema in `packages/lib/src/db`). Docker Compose defaults new installations to PostgreSQL 18.
- Migrations are managed with **drizzle-kit**. Run from `packages/lib`:

Under Docker Compose, the `db-migrate` service runs migrations automatically before `web` and `worker` start. `pg-boss` also creates its own queue schema on worker startup.

## Deployment Documentation

Getcito supports multiple deployment models via Docker Compose. Below are the comprehensive guides for deploying Getcito locally, as a demo, or as a fully white-labeled instance.

### 1. Local Deployment

The local deployment builds and runs the full stack (PostgreSQL, automatic migrations, web dashboard, background worker, and Adminer DB UI) from source.

**Prerequisites:**
- [Docker](https://docs.docker.com/get-docker/) with Docker Compose plugin.
- A clone of this repository.

**Step-by-step Setup:**

1. **Configure Environment Variables**
   Copy the committed template to `.env`, then fill in your actual values. Ensure `DEPLOYMENT_MODE` is set to `local`:
   ```bash

   ```
   *Required variables include: `DATABASE_URL`, `DEPLOYMENT_MODE`, `BETTER_AUTH_SECRET`, and any required `SCRAPE_TARGETS` API keys.*

2. **Build Docker Images**
   ```bash
   docker compose build
   ```

3. **Start the Stack**
   ```bash
   docker compose up -d
   ```

### 2. Demo Deployment

The Demo deployment mode (`DEPLOYMENT_MODE=demo`) is designed to host a public or staging instance where users can test the application.

**Demo Capabilities Verified in Repo:**
- The login screen will automatically read `VITE_DEMO_EMAIL` and `VITE_DEMO_PASSWORD` from your environment variables to pre-fill the login form for test users.
- Relies on the same standard infrastructure (PostgreSQL, web, worker).

**Setup:**
1. Configure your `.env` file with `DEPLOYMENT_MODE=demo` and `VITE_DEPLOYMENT_MODE=demo`.
2. Add your demo credentials:
   ```env

   ```
3. Deploy using the standard Compose commands:

*(Note: External cloud hosting or demo-specific infrastructure is not provided in this repository; it relies solely on the `demo` mode application flag).*

### 3. White Label Deployment

Getcito supports a fully rebrandable **White Label** mode powered by Auth0 SSO.

**White Label Capabilities:**
- Custom branding baked into the client bundle at build time: App Name, App Icon, Parent Brand URLs, and Custom Optimization URL Templates.
- Authentication delegated completely to Auth0.
- Includes a Docker Compose file with configurable host ports (Web `3000`, DB `5432`, Adminer `8080` by default).

**Setup:**

1. **Review the Compose Template**
   The repository includes [`docker-compose.whitelabel.yml`](docker-compose.whitelabel.yml). It contains no secrets; all credentials and branding come from `.env`.

## Linting & Formatting

Both linting and formatting are handled by **[Biome](https://biomejs.dev/)** (config in `biome.json`).

## CI/CD

Releases are managed on `master` by the GitHub Actions release workflow and **Changesets** (`pnpm changeset` → `pnpm version-packages` → GitHub Release).

## Security Notes

- **Never commit secrets.** API keys, `.env` contents, and auth secrets must stay out of version control. Generate `BETTER_AUTH_SECRET` as random hex per deployment.
- Docker runtime images run as **non-root** users.
- `pnpm-workspace.yaml` pins security-patched transitive dependency versions (see the `overrides` block) and enforces a minimum release age / no-downgrade trust policy for new packages.
- Report vulnerabilities privately per [`SECURITY.md`](SECURITY.md) — email [team@getcito.com](mailto:team@getcito.com), do not open a public issue.
