# wakewire

**Break the loop.** GitHub, Gmail, Slack — and anything with a webhook (Linear,
Sentry, ClickUp, your CI) — pushed straight into your
[Codex](https://developers.openai.com/codex) threads.

No more agents polling on a timer: a webhook fires or an email lands, and seconds
later a new turn appears in the thread you chose — the event framed as untrusted
data, under instructions you wrote.

Everything runs on your machine. No cloud component, no web UI — you configure and
inspect it conversationally from inside Codex.

## Quick start

Then, in a Codex conversation:

The bundled `$wakewire-setup` skill walks the model through resolving the current
thread id, creating a smee.io relay channel, giving you the webhook URL + secret
to paste into GitHub, and adding the route. Test it with a push — the turn should
arrive within seconds.

**Watch it live (one opt-in setting):** enable shared-server mode and a
`codex --remote` TUI streams injected turns in token-by-token:

Without it, injected turns appear in the desktop app or `codex resume` when the
thread is next opened. (The listen port is off by default because it exposes an
unauthenticated loopback control plane for codex — enable it knowingly.)

For Gmail: label-based watching over IMAP IDLE, with two auth options — a Gmail
app password (`wakewire auth imap`, simplest; also works for any other IMAP
server) or your own Google OAuth client (`wakewire auth gmail`, Desktop type —
you bring your own because wakewire is self-hosted). See

For Slack: Socket Mode — an outbound WebSocket, no public URL, same spirit as the
smee relay. Create a Slack app once (`wakewire_source_setup_slack` returns the
exact steps), store the app + bot tokens with `wakewire auth slack`, and route
`app_mention`s (any channel the bot is in) or `message`s (named channels only —
watch-everything is rejected, and bot chatter is skipped by default).

**Any other provider** works through the generic webhook source
(`wakewire_source_setup_webhook`): pick a verification preset (HMAC-SHA256 header
or shared-secret header), let capture mode store a few raw events, have the
model author a field mapping from a real payload, done. The mapping doubles as
the payload whitelist — only mapped fields ever reach the model. Ready-made
recipes for ClickUp, Linear, and Sentry live in [recipes/](recipes/).

The instruction block comes from your route's template (whitelisted summary fields
only). The payload is trimmed at the source (commit messages capped at 500 chars,
email bodies at 4,000, HTML converted to text) and fenced so it cannot impersonate

## Routes

A route = match + target + prompt template + sandbox.

- **Match** — GitHub: `{repo, events: ["push", "pull_request.opened", ...], branches?}`.
  Gmail: `{label, fromContains?}`; a label is required — watch-everything routes are
  rejected by design. Slack: `{events: ["app_mention"]}` or
  `{channels: ["#dev"], events: ["message"], fromUser?, textContains?}`.
- **Target** — an existing thread (`{type:"thread",threadId}`) or a fresh one per event
  (`{type:"new-thread",cwd,worktree?}`; `worktree:true` runs each delivery in a
  detached git worktree under `~/.wakewire/worktrees`).
- **Sandbox** — `read-only` (default, and forced for gmail) or `workspace-write`
  (github/slack/webhook routes, opt-in — see SECURITY.md before enabling it on
  sources whose content strangers can influence). Applied per injected turn.

Deliveries are deduplicated by the source's delivery id, serialized per thread
(never two turns in flight on one thread from wakewire), retried with capped
backoff whenever Codex is unreachable, and coalesced into a single digest turn if a
route exceeds its rate limit (default 10/minute).

## How injection works (and its limits)

WakeWire talks to Codex through an adapter (config: settings key `sink.adapter`):

- **`codex-app-server`** (default) — speaks the app-server v2 JSON-RPC protocol
  (`thread/resume` + `turn/start`) and can detect a turn already in flight on the
  thread and back off. Its best trick is **shared-ws mode** (set
  `sink.appServerListen` to e.g. `ws://127.0.0.1:4571`): wakewire runs a shared
  app-server on a loopback WebSocket, and any `codex --remote ws://127.0.0.1:4571`
  TUI attached to it sees injected turns **stream in live**, token by token. The
  desktop app keeps its own embedded server, so it still shows turns on thread
  reload only. The app-server surface is marked experimental by OpenAI and this
  adapter talks to *your installed* codex, so a codex update could break it —
  if that happens, switch adapters with one command (below) and file an issue.
- **`codex-sdk`** — uses `@openai/codex-sdk`, which runs `codex exec resume`
  under the hood with its own *vendored* codex binary, so it can never drift out
  of sync with a codex release. The stability fallback:
  `wakewire config set sink.adapter codex-sdk` (then restart the daemon).
- **`codex-exec`** — plain `codex exec` shell-out against your installed codex;
  maximum-compatibility last resort.

Honest caveats: cross-client thread attachment is not officially documented by
OpenAI; with the default SDK adapter, an open thread in the desktop app won't
visibly refresh until reloaded, and wakewire cannot see a human's in-flight turn
(it does serialize its own). Details and evidence in [DECISIONS.md](DECISIONS.md).

## When OpenAI ships native triggers

They probably will, and that's fine — wakewire is deliberately a thin bridge, not
a platform. The migration story: your routes are declarative rows in
`~/.wakewire/state.db` (`wakewire` = match + template + target). When a native
trigger/automation system lands, port each route's match to the native trigger and
keep (or drop) the daemon for sources the native system doesn't cover. Nothing in
your workflow couples to wakewire internals: events arrive as ordinary turns, and
the delivery log is plain SQLite you can export. We'll ship a migration note with
whatever the native feature turns out to be, and deprecate overlapping sources
rather than compete.

## Non-goals (v1)

No cloud/hosted component, no web dashboard, no writing to Codex's internal
databases, no Gmail Pub/Sub (IMAP IDLE only; the source interface accommodates a
Pub/Sub adapter later), no Claude Code sink yet (the `AgentAdapter` interface is
the seam where one would go).

## Windows

Run `wakewire start` in a terminal, or wrap it with
[NSSM](https://nssm.cc/): `nssm install wakewire <node.exe> <path-to>/dist/cli.js start`.
No native service wrapper in v1.
