# Meccha Chameleon For MAC

**One command to set up [MECCHA CHAMELEON](https://store.steampowered.com/app/4704690), [PEAK](https://store.steampowered.com/app/3527290) and other Windows games on an Apple Silicon Mac, via [Whisky](https://github.com/frankea/Whisky).**

Neither game officially supports macOS. This repo automates a Whisky/Wine setup that makes them run, verified end-to-end on an **Apple M3 Pro / macOS 15.7.3**.

`install.sh` is the common base: it installs Whisky, creates the bottle, and installs the full Windows game runtime stack, so other games generally work too.

## TL;DR

On the target Mac (Apple Silicon, macOS 15+), open **Terminal** and run **one command**:

Then install Steam, log into your account, install the game, and launch it from Steam. Done.

## Quick start

1. Copy `install.sh` (and/or `install.zh-TW.sh`) to the target Mac — e.g. AirDrop, or:

2. Run it:

   > An AirDrop'd `.sh` keeps a quarantine flag, but running it with `bash file.sh` is **not** blocked by Gatekeeper (the file is read as data, not executed as an app). No `chmod`/`xattr` needed.
3. When it finishes, follow the on-screen "Run MECCHA CHAMELEON" steps (install Steam → log in → install the game → launch from Steam).

### What the script does (10 steps)

`system checks` → `Rosetta 2` → `Homebrew + winetricks/cabextract/coreutils` → `Whisky.app (signed & notarized cask)` → `whisky CLI symlink` → `pre-stage the Wine runtime (skips the first-run GUI, verifies SHA-256)` → `create the "Games" bottle` → `set graphics backend = DXMT` → `wineboot init` → `install all game dependencies` → `reset to Windows 10` → `verify (cmd /c ver)`.

It is **idempotent** — safe to re-run; already-done steps are detected and skipped.

### Windows game runtime (installed into the bottle via winetricks)
All of these are verified to install on ARM/Rosetta Wine 11:

- **Visual C++ Redistributables:** `vcrun2005 vcrun2008 vcrun2010 vcrun2012 vcrun2013 vcrun2022`
- **DirectX helpers:** `d3dcompiler_43 d3dcompiler_47 d3dx9 d3dx10 d3dx11_43`
- **Audio / input:** `xact xact_x64 xinput faudio`
- **Graphics:** `gdiplus`
- **.NET:** `dotnetdesktop8` (modern .NET 8 desktop runtime) + `dotnet48` (.NET Framework 4.8 — installed "best effort"; it is often flaky under WoW64 Wine, and the runtime already bundles wine-mono for many cases)
- **Fonts:** `corefonts` (MS core fonts) + `cjkfonts` (CJK fonts)

> The actual Direct3D→Metal translation is done by the **graphics backend** (D3DMetal/DXMT/DXVK), **not** by winetricks. The `d3dx*`/`d3dcompiler` verbs only provide helper DLLs that games load explicitly. The installer deliberately does **not** run `winetricks dxvk` (that fetches upstream DXVK 2.x, which needs Vulkan 1.3 features MoltenVK lacks, and would clobber Whisky's curated build).

## How MECCHA CHAMELEON runs (the key finding)

MECCHA CHAMELEON is **Unreal Engine 5** (`.pak`/`.ucas`/`.utoc`), **online-multiplayer only**, and ships **no kernel anti-cheat** — so it *can* run under Wine. The only blocker is the graphics backend. Backends were tested one by one (by window geometry + screenshots):

| **DXMT** | ✅ **works** — engine initializes, window opens, stable; via Steam it reaches the main menu |

Why DXMT: this UE5 title wants a **D3D11 / Shader Model 5** device. DXMT translates D3D11→Metal and ships the full `d3d11 + dxgi + d3d10core` trio, giving Unreal a device it accepts. The installer sets `GRAPHICS_BACKEND=dxmt` on the bottle by default.

**You must launch the game through Steam** (Steam running + logged in). It's online-only, so running the game `.exe` directly without Steam just sits on a black screen.

## PEAK (Unity 6 mouse input)

> **What [`ptrshim/`](ptrshim) is:** a ~100 KB DLL you drop into a game folder to fix broken mouse input in **Unity 6** games running under Wine. It is not specific to PEAK — any Unity 6 title with the symptom below can use it.
>
> **Do you need it?** Only if the mouse misbehaves. Check the game's `Player.log` for `EnableMouseInPointer failed` — that one line is the whole diagnosis. If it's absent, this shim will do nothing for you.
>
> **How to use it:** `bash ptrshim/install.sh "<game folder>"`, then launch normally. Undo with `--remove`.

PEAK runs on Whisky as-is — graphics, audio and networking are all fine — but the mouse is broken: on Unity **6000.3.x** the cursor tracks your movement yet **clicks are never delivered**, so you can't get past the menus.

The cause is in Wine, not the game. Unity 6's Windows input backend calls `EnableMouseInPointer()` on startup and, when it succeeds, drives its Mouse device from `WM_POINTER*` messages plus `GetPointerInfo()`. Wine 11 exports those Win8 pointer APIs but they are **stubs** — they return `ERROR_CALL_NOT_IMPLEMENTED`, and no `WM_POINTER*` message is ever generated. The fingerprint is one line in the game's `Player.log`:

How much breaks depends on the Unity version — newer builds have a partial fallback:

[`ptrshim/`](ptrshim) fills the gap inside the game process: it makes the pointer APIs report success and answers `GetPointerInfo()` from its own state, then installs a `WH_GETMESSAGE` hook that synthesises `WM_POINTERENTER / UPDATE / DOWN / UP / WHEEL` from the legacy `WM_MOUSE*` messages Wine *does* deliver.

It loads as a **`version.dll` proxy** — `UnityPlayer.dll` statically imports `VERSION.dll`, so dropping the file next to the game executable gets it loaded early, and all 16 real exports are tail-jumped through to the system `version.dll`. That keeps the blast radius to a single game folder: **nothing global is patched and no other process is touched.** The installer also sets `version=native,builtin` on the bottle, because Wine prefers its builtin `version.dll` otherwise.

Two approaches were deliberately rejected:

- **Patching Wine's `user32.dll` globally** — that would make `EnableMouseInPointer()` succeed for *every* program, pushing apps whose mouse currently works onto a WM_POINTER path that Wine can't actually service. (Loading Wine's builtin `user32.dll` as native also breaks the prefix outright — it's tied to `win32u` by syscall numbers.)
- **`AppInit_DLLs` injection** — process-wide injection for a single game's problem.

A prebuilt `version.dll` is committed so installing needs no toolchain — pulling a few hundred MB of cross-compiler for a ~100 KB DLL isn't a good trade. If you'd rather not trust a committed binary, the whole thing is three short source files next to it; `bash ptrshim/install.sh --build` rebuilds it after `brew install mingw-w64`.

Same as MECCHA, **launch PEAK through Steam** — it's online co-op.

## Security considerations

This installer was reviewed for safety. Summary:

**The script itself is clean:**
- **No secrets/credentials** anywhere; it never handles your Steam password (you log into Steam yourself).
- **No `sudo`** is run by the script. Only `softwareupdate --install-rosetta` and the official Homebrew installer prompt for auth themselves, when needed.
- **No destructive deletes** — the only `rm -rf` targets a `mktemp -d` temporary directory.
- **`xattr` is scoped** — quarantine is removed only from the staged Wine libraries folder you just downloaded, never broadly.
- All downloads are **HTTPS** from reputable sources. The Wine runtime archive is **SHA-256 checked before extraction** — but the hash comes from the same project's version manifest, so it is an integrity/corruption check, **not** independent supply-chain trust (and if that manifest ever omits the hash, the script warns and proceeds rather than failing). Extraction uses `tar --no-same-owner` into a dedicated Application Support subfolder; macOS `bsdtar` strips leading slashes and refuses `..` escapes. Whisky itself installs as a **notarized** cask.
- An install **log** is written to `~/whisky-setup/install.log` (no secrets, just step output).

**Trust boundaries you're accepting (the same as any Whisky user):**
- The official **Homebrew `curl | bash`** installer (only if Homebrew is missing) — it fetches the moving `HEAD/install.sh`, not a pinned revision (standard for Homebrew, but not independently hash-verified).
- Downloading **Whisky + WhiskyWine** from the frankea project; the SHA-256 above is published by the same project (integrity, not independent trust).
- The script `eval`s the environment output of the **Whisky CLI** (`whisky shellenv`) and **`brew shellenv`** — standard practice, but it does execute those trusted binaries' output.

**⚠️ The most important caveat — Wine is _not_ a sandbox:**
Any Windows program you run in a Whisky bottle executes with **your macOS user's permissions**, and Wine maps drive `Z:` to `/` — meaning a Windows `.exe` in the bottle **can read and write your Mac's files**. Therefore:
- ✅ Only run **games/programs you trust** (MECCHA CHAMELEON from Steam is fine).
- ❌ Do **not** use this bottle to run unknown `.exe` files, cracks, or random downloads.
- For anything risky, use a **separate, disposable bottle** and review the bottle's drive mappings.

The scripts are short and readable — you're encouraged to read `install.sh` before running it.

## Troubleshooting
