# Benchmarks

Benchmarks based on [Oracle Java Microbenchmark Harness](http://openjdk.java.net/projects/code-tools/jmh/), inspired by [metrics-benchmark](https://github.com/dropwizard/metrics/blob/master/metrics-benchmarks).

# Running

### compile the jar

mise run build

### format Java

mise run format
    mise run fmt

## run the benchmarks

List available benchmarks:

mise run bench-list

Run quick benchmarks (low-confidence sanity check) with interactive `fzf` target picker:

mise run bench-fast

Run benchmarks with more reasonable settings for smaller error bars:

mise run bench

Run with an explicit target regex (without picker):

mise run bench-fast -- "StringFormatVsJoinBenchmark"
    mise run bench -- "StringUtilsBenchmark"

Use `all` to run everything:

mise run bench -- all

In interactive mode, you can also pick `class:...` entries to run all benchmarks in one class.

Raw JMH examples (regex is case sensitive):

java -jar target/benchmarks.jar "StringForm"

List all benchmark that match the pattern:

java -jar target/benchmarks.jar "StringForm" -l

Show all command line options:

java -jar target/benchmarks.jar -h

Sane defaults for the various JMH params have been set for quick local runs, you can override them via:

java -jar target/benchmarks.jar -t 4  -f 2 -i 10 -wi 5
