# Excuse-as-a-Service (EaaS)

A simple API that generates context-aware excuses. Need a creative excuse for any situation? This has you covered.

Inspired by [no-as-a-service](https://github.com/hotheadhacker/no-as-a-service), but generates unique excuses every time instead of returning pre-written ones.

## Features

- **AI-powered generation**: Uses Google Gemini to create unique excuses on the fly
- **Fallback system**: 250+ pre-written excuses when AI isn't available
- **Context-aware**: Supports office, exam, family, relationship, tech, delivery, and meeting contexts
- **Tone control**: Professional, casual, funny, or desperate
- **Urgency levels**: Low, medium, or high
- **Rate limiting**: 120 requests per minute per IP
- **Always works**: Falls back to seed data if AI fails

## Quick Start

### Installation

```bash
npm install
```

### Configuration

Create a `.env` file in the project root:

```
GEMINI_API_KEY=your_api_key_here
GEMINI_MODEL=gemini-1.5-flash
PORT=3000
```

The API works without a Gemini API key—it'll just use the seed data instead. But with an API key, you get unique excuses every time.

### Run

```bash
npm start
```

The API will be available at `http://localhost:3000`

## API Usage

### Generate Context-Aware Excuse

```
GET /excuse
```

**Query Parameters:**
- `context` (optional): `office`, `exam`, `family`, `relationship`, `tech`, `delivery`, `meeting`
- `urgency` (optional): `low`, `medium`, `high`
- `tone` (optional): `professional`, `casual`, `funny`, `desperate`
- `useSeed` (optional): Set to `true` to skip AI and use seed data only

**Example Request:**

### Random Excuse

```
GET /excuse/random
```

Returns a completely random excuse with random context, urgency, and tone.

### Health Check

```

Returns API status and whether AI generation is available.

## How It Works

When you request an excuse:

1. If a Gemini API key is set, it generates a unique excuse using AI
2. If AI fails or isn't available, it picks a random excuse from the seed data
3. The response includes which method was used (`source: "llm"` or `source: "seed"`)

The AI uses example excuses from the seed data to understand the style, then creates something new that matches your context, urgency, and tone.

## Configuration

**Environment Variables:**
- `GEMINI_API_KEY`: Your Google Gemini API key (optional)
- `GEMINI_MODEL`: Model to use (default: `gemini-1.5-flash`)
- `PORT`: Server port (default: `3000`)

**Rate Limiting:** 120 requests per minute per IP (configurable in `index.js`)

## Deployment

**Local Development:**
```bash
npm run dev  # Auto-reload on changes
```

**Production:**
```bash
npm start
```

**With PM2:**
```bash
pm2 start index.js --name excuse-api
```
