## XMQ another way to work with XML/HTML/JSON

The xmq format can exactly represent the content of the xml/html/json file
and can therefore be converted back to xml/html/json after any editing has
been done.

For html you can use the suffix htmq to indicate that you have written
html using the xmq format.

Xmq can of course also be used as a configuration language directly
for your application! You can just copy&paste dist/xmq.h and
dist/xmq.c into your source code directory to have xmq support.

In xmq you can omit the root node (if you supply an implicit root) this
can make your xmq config files for your application even simpler to read.

# The xmq cli command

The xmq tool has several useful commands, for example:

## Use IXML to convert any input into XML/JSON/XMQ

Write an ixml grammar for dates and store this into dates.ixml
```
date   = day, -' ', month, -' ', year.
day    = digit | digit, digit.
-digit = '0' | '1' | '2' | '3' | '4' | '5' | '6' | '7' | '8' | '9'.
month  = 'January' | 'February' | 'March' | 'April' | 'May' | 'June' |
         'July' | 'August' | 'September' | 'October' | 'November' | 'December'.
year   = digit, digit, digit, digit.
```

Then you run `xmq dates.ixml -i '22 November 2024'`
and you will get the output:

```

or if you prefer JSON: xmq dates.ixml -i '22 November 2024' to-json | jq .`

Here is an ixml grammar to convert a file with lines of tab separated values:

```
lines = line+.
line  = col++-#9, nl.
col   = ~[ #9; #a; #d ]+.
-nl   = -#d?, -#a.
```

Given the tabbed input file:
```
2024-01-01<TAB>red<TAB>8<NL>
```

Generates xmq such as:
```
lines {
    line {
        col = 2024-01-01
        col = red
        col = 8
    }
}
```

That can be converted to xml or json. But if you know the column names, you can create
a more tailored grammar:
```
cars  = car+.
car   = date, -#9, color, -#9, count, nl.
date  = ~[#9;#a;#d]+.
color = ~[#9;#a;#d]+.
count = ~[#9;#a;#d]+.
-nl   = -#d?, -#a.
```

And the xmq/xml/json output will have matched the columns to keys directly.

        date  = 2024-01-01

```

## Colors and themes

Xmq tries to detect the background color of the terminal. This is used
to select different color palettes in light and dark modes.

Even if you are running within a dark terminal you can force a light coloring with `XMQ_BG=light`
and vice versa. This is usefule when spawning a browser and you want a different mode in the browser.
For example: `XMQ_BG=light xmq info.xml br`

You can also modify the individual colors with XMQ_THEME. There are 15 colors that can be changed.

NSD name space declaration
UW unicode whitespace (not normal spaces, instead unbreakable space etc)
XSL the name space with the label xsl (improve readability of xsl transforms)
FG foreground color (white on dark background, black on light backgrounds)
BG background color (usually the terminals own color, but can be changed for html)
```

To change the comment color to red underline bold for both dark and light backgrounds:

`export XMQ_THEME=C=#ff0000_U_B`

To make the change sensitive to dark/light backgrounds:

`export XMQ_THEME=dark+C=#ff0000_U_B,light+C=#880000_U_B`

You can make override more than one color for both light and dark.

`export XMQ_THEME=dark+C=#ff0000_B:Q=#00ffff_U:EKV=#112233_U_B,light+C=#880000`

The default theme is:

You can override the foreground and background color when generting html. For example if you want a white background instead of the light yellow default:
```
XMQ_BG=light XMQ_THEME=BG=#ffffff xmq input.ixml br
```

Or if you want a dark background instead of the dark grey.
```
XMQ_BG=dark XMQ_THEME=BG=#000000 xmq input.ixml br
```

Or override them both, since the CSS contains both light and dark.
```
XMQ_BG=light XMQ_THEME=light+BG=#ffffff,dark+BG=#000000 ./xmq foo.xmq br
```

## Using xmq.h and xmq.c in your program

If you want to add support for xmq to your program, just copy paste
dist/xmq.h and dist/xmq.c in your source code directory and add
libxml2 to the build dependencies and you are done. :-)

## Building

Build with debug symbols:

Build with address sanitizer :

(To run asan tests you might have to disable address space randomization first:
`make disable_address_randomization`)

## Cross complation

To Windows msi installer from GNU/Linux AMD64:

The msi installer is found here: `./build/x86_64-w64-mingw32/windows_installer/xmq-windows-release.msi`
It will install the xmq.exe and its supporting dlls here: `C:\Program Files (x86)\libxmq\xmq`
Add this dir to your PATH: `PATH=%PATH%;"C:\Program Files (x86)\libxmq\xmq"`

To static binary for GNU/Linux AMD64, ie link static libxml2 and libxslt and libz.

## How to install the gnulinux binary executable

Download the xmq-gnu-linux-release.tar.gz file.

mkdir -p ~/bin
mv xmq ~/bin
```
Restart your shell and xmq should be in your path.

## How to install the MacOS binary executable

Download the xmq-macos-release.tar.gz file.

tar xzf xmq-macos-release.tar.gz
xattr -d com.apple.quarantine xmq
mkdir -p ~/bin
mv xmq ~/bin
```
Restart your shell and xmq should be in your path.

## How to install the windows binary executable

Download the xmq-windows-release.msi and install it.

You will find the xmq.exe and its supporting dlls here: `C:\Program Files (x86)\libxmq\xmq`
Add this dir to your PATH: `PATH=%PATH%;"C:\Program Files (x86)\libxmq\xmq"`
