# Houdini 21 MCP Integration

Connect Claude Code to Houdini 21 via the Model Context Protocol (MCP).

## Overview

This integration allows Claude Code to interact with Houdini 21, enabling AI-assisted 3D content creation, scene manipulation, and automation. The system consists of:

1. **Houdini Server** (`server.py`) - A TCP server running inside Houdini that handles commands
2. **MCP Bridge** (`mcp_bridge.py`) - A bridge that connects Claude Code (via stdio) to the Houdini server (via TCP)
3. **Documentation RAG** (`houdini_rag.py`) - BM25-based search over Houdini documentation (works without Houdini running)

## Features

- **Scene Information** - Get details about the current Houdini scene
- **Node Operations** - Create, modify, delete, and inspect nodes
- **Code Execution** - Run arbitrary Python code in Houdini's environment
- **Material Assignment** - Create and apply materials to objects

## Installation

### 1. Copy Houdini Files

Copy the contents of the `houdini/` directory to your Houdini preferences folder:

**macOS:**

**Windows:**

```

**Linux:**

```

### 2. Configure Claude Code

Add the MCP server configuration to your Claude Code settings.

**Option A: Global settings** (`~/.claude/settings.json`):

**Option B: Using the example config:**

Then edit the path to match your Houdini preferences location.

> **Important:** The `-u` flag is required for unbuffered Python output, which is necessary for the MCP protocol to work correctly.

### 3. Start Houdini

Launch Houdini 21. The MCP server will start automatically on port 9876.

You should see in Houdini's console:

Houdini MCP plugin loaded successfully
HoudiniMCP server started on localhost:9876
```

### 4. Connect Claude Code

In Claude Code, run:

/mcp
```

You should see the houdini server connected.

## Available Tools

### Houdini Scene Tools (require Houdini running)

| `modify_node` | Modify node parameters, position, or name |
| `delete_node` | Delete a node |

| `set_material` | Create and apply materials |
| `render_single_view` | Render a single view |
| `render_quad_view` | Render four orthographic views |
| `render_specific_camera` | Render from a specific camera |

## Documentation Search (RAG)

The integration includes a BM25-based retrieval system for Houdini documentation:

- **11,238 documentation pages** indexed
- **88,916 unique terms** in the search index
- **Zero external dependencies** - uses only Python standard library
- **Works offline** - no internet required
- **Fast** - pre-built index loads instantly

### Usage Examples

Search for Karma render settings:

Search for MaterialX shaders:

```

Get full documentation:

get_doc("solaris/karma.md")
```

### Rebuilding the Index

If you update the documentation, rebuild the index:

```

## Troubleshooting

### Connection Issues

1. **Check Houdini is running** and the server started (look for the startup message)

2. **Verify port 9876 is open:**
   ```bash
   nc -zv localhost 9876
   ```

3. **Check Claude Code config** has the correct path and `-u` flag

4. **Restart the MCP connection:**
   ```
   /mcp
   ```

### Documentation Search Issues

1. **Check index exists:** Verify `docs_index.json` is present
2. **Rebuild index:** Run `python3 houdini_rag.py build`

### Debug Mode

To enable debug logging in the bridge, add to `mcp_bridge.py`:

```

Then add `debug_log()` calls where needed.
