# Unknowns Field Guide

An Agent Skills / Claude Code skill for discovering and managing unknowns before, during, and after ambiguous agentic work.

This repository contains a reusable implementation inspired by the workflow described in [A Field Guide to Fable: Finding Your Unknowns](https://x.com/trq212/status/2073100352921215386). It is an independent implementation, written as a practical skill package rather than a copy of the article.

## What It Does

The skill guides an agent through a complete unknowns loop:

- Blindspot pass for unknown unknowns.
- Brainstorming and cheap prototypes for hidden preferences.
- Focused interview questions when answers can change the work.
- Reference scans over source code, docs, screenshots, or examples.
- Implementation plans that surface decisions first.
- Implementation notes during execution.
- Post-implementation explainers, reviewer packs, and quizzes.

`unknowns-field-guide/` is the installable skill directory. It follows the Agent Skills convention: a self-contained folder with `SKILL.md`.

## Install In Claude Code

Personal install:

Project install:

Windows PowerShell personal install:

After installation, invoke it directly in Claude Code with `/unknowns-field-guide`, or let Claude load it when your request matches the description in `SKILL.md`.

## Triggering Strategy

Agent Skills are not automatic pre-implementation hooks. Claude Code sees the skill name and description first, then loads `SKILL.md` only when the current task appears relevant or when you invoke it directly.

For reliable use, add a short rule to your project `CLAUDE.md`, `AGENTS.md`, or equivalent agent instructions:

Before starting any implementation task that is ambiguous, unfamiliar, likely to take more than a few steps, or likely to affect architecture, UX, security, data models, cost, or reviewer buy-in, read and use the `unknowns-field-guide` skill.

If you want the ritual to be fully explicit, start a task with:

The skill itself is the playbook. The project instruction is what makes the playbook show up before implementation instead of relying only on automatic trigger matching.

## Validation

Validate with the skill tooling in your client, if available. At minimum, confirm `unknowns-field-guide/SKILL.md` has valid YAML frontmatter with `name` and `description`, then install it locally and invoke `/unknowns-field-guide` in Claude Code.
