# painterly-urp

A post-process renderer feature for Unity URP that makes your scene look like it was painted with gouache or oils.

Two passes. First one breaks the image into Voronoi brush patches anchored in world space, adds light banding and per-patch value variation. Second one draws highlight strokes along the light terminator and runs an organic outline on top with smooth thickness variation so it doesnt look like a uniform border.

## Requirements

- Unity 6+
- URP 17+
- Render Graph enabled (default in Unity 6)

## Setup

1. Copy the `Assets/Shaders` and `Assets/Rendering` folders into your project.
2. In your URP Renderer asset, add **Painterly Gouache** first, then **Painterly Outline** below it.
3. In the renderer settings, enable **Depth Texture** and **Depth Normals Prepass**.

Thats it.

## Parameters

**Gouache**

| Parameter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Cell Scale | Brush patch size. Lower = bigger chunks. |
| Cell Jitter | How random the patch placement is. 0 is a grid. |
| Patch Stretch | Elongates patches into brushstroke shapes. |
| Blend Softness | How much patches bleed into each other. |
| Light Bands | Number of cel-shading steps on the luminance. 1 disables it. |
| Hi Strength | Opacity of highlight strokes. 0 to turn them off. |
| Hi Threshold | Minimum N dot L for a stroke to appear. |
| Hi Density | Fraction of world cells that emit a stroke. |

**Outline**

| Parameter | What it does |
|---|---|
| Thickness | Dilation radius in pixels. |
| Depth Threshold | Sensitivity for geometry edges. |
| Color Weight | How much luminance edges contribute vs depth edges. |
| Stroke Freq | Spatial frequency of the thick/thin variation. |
| Stroke Duty | Minimum opacity. 0 lets the line fade out completely. |
| Jitter | Per-frame UV shift for the line boil effect. |

## Good starting values

The defaults are tuned for a mid-size object filling most of the screen. If things look off, the two most impactul knobs are **Cell Scale** (patch size) and **Hi Threshold** (where highlights appear).
