# OpenCut — The Free CapCut Alternative, One Click to Install, With Every AI Feature CapCut Charges For

CapCut got tired to use: watermarks slapped across your exports, basic features locked behind Pro, monthly charges for things that used to be free — and ByteDance training its models on your footage. **OpenCut** is the open-source answer that already earned 70,000+ GitHub stars: a real timeline video editor, MIT-licensed, files never leave your device. The only catch was setup — cloning the repo, Docker, a Rust toolchain. **This build fixes that.** One signed installer, double-click, you're editing. And we bolted on the AI suite CapCut puts behind a subscription — text-to-video, auto-captions, background removal, auto-reframe, silence cut — free, watermark-free, forever.

## Two clicks to editing

The official OpenCut is brilliant but developer-first — you clone, install dependencies, run Docker, and the desktop version wants a Rust toolchain. Most people just want to edit a video.

- **Windows** → `OpenCut-x64.exe`, double-click. Signed, SmartScreen-clean. No Docker, no Node, no Rust.
- **Mac** → `OpenCut.dmg`, drag to Applications. Notarized, universal (Apple Silicon + Intel).
- **Linux** → `.deb`, `.rpm`, and AppImage.
Everything bundled. Open it and the full timeline editor is right there — no terminal, ever.

## The AI suite — the stuff CapCut makes you pay for

This is what we added on top. Each of these is a paid feature in CapCut; here they're free and watermark-free.

**🎬 Generate video from text or image.** Type a prompt or drop a still and get a clip straight onto your timeline — powered by frontier generative video models, no separate app, no export-import dance.

**💬 Auto-captions.** One click transcribes your whole video with accurate timecodes, then styles the captions — animated word-by-word, TikTok-style highlight, or clean subtitles. Multi-language.

**✂️ Silence & filler cut.** Auto-detects dead air, "um"s, and long pauses across the whole timeline and removes them — the single biggest time-saver for talking-head content.

**🪄 Background removal.** Cut yourself out of any clip with no green screen, on-device, frame-accurate.

**📱 Smart auto-reframe.** Turn a 16:9 edit into 9:16 vertical (or 1:1) with subject tracking that keeps the action in frame — the exact feature CapCut gates behind Pro.

**🎙 AI voiceover & voice clone.** Turn a script into narration, or clone a reference voice for consistent VO across a series.

**📝 Text-based editing.** Edit the transcript like a doc — delete a sentence, the video deletes with it. Rearrange paragraphs, the clips rearrange.

**🎞 AI b-roll suggestions.** The editor reads your script's context and suggests relevant b-roll and stock inserts at the right moments.

**🔌 MCP server built in.** OpenCut's roadmap put an MCP server "coming soon" — here it's shipped. Drive the editor from Claude, Cursor, or any AI agent: "cut this to 60 seconds, add captions, export vertical" and it happens.

## A note on privacy — because we mean it

OpenCut's whole point is that your files stay yours. Core editing — timeline, cuts, effects, compositing — runs entirely on your machine and never uploads your footage. That guarantee is intact here.

The AI features are the one honest exception: generating video, transcribing captions, or cloning a voice runs on cloud AI models, so the specific clip you're processing is sent to the model provider for that task, then results come back to your local timeline. It's opt-in and per-action — nothing is uploaded unless you click an AI button. Pure editing stays 100% local; you choose when AI is worth a round-trip. No blanket "we uploaded your whole project" like the thing we're all leaving behind.

## Questions

**Is it really free forever?** Yes. The editor is MIT-licensed OpenCut — free, no watermark, no account, structurally un-paywallable. The AI features are free too; heavy users can optionally plug in their own model key, but the default free tier covers normal use.

**Is it safe to install?** Signed on Windows, notarized on Mac, SHA-256 checksums published, source on GitHub. It's the real OpenCut plus our AI layer — nothing hidden.

**Do I lose anything vs official OpenCut?** No — it's the same editor, same MIT core, just pre-built so you skip Docker and Rust, with AI features added on top.

**How is this different from CapCut?** No watermark, no subscription, no account, and your footage is never used to train anyone's models. Plus every Pro-gated AI feature, free.

**Does my video get uploaded?** Only the specific clip you run an AI action on, and only then. All ordinary editing is fully local.

**Mobile?** OpenCut targets web, desktop, and mobile from one project. This installer covers desktop; your projects carry over.
