# TPS Workshop

Local TPS benchmark harness for Substrate and Solana. This repo bundles a
Substrate node template with a prefunded dev chain and a Rust benchmark that
generates, submits, and reports throughput over 1,000,000 transactions.

## Repo layout

- `bench/`: Benchmark harness (Substrate via subxt, Solana via test validator).
- `substrate/`: Substrate node template with prefunded dev accounts.

## Prerequisites

- Rust stable (see `substrate/env-setup/rust-toolchain.toml`).
- Build dependencies for Substrate: https://docs.substrate.io/install/
- `just` (optional, for the convenience commands in `justfile`).

## Quick start (Substrate)

1. Start the node:

```sh
   just run-substrate-basic
   ```

Options:
   - `just run-substrate-basic`: default runtime (6s blocks, 75% normal dispatch, 5MB max block, standard weights).
   - `just run-substrate-full`: enables `full-block`.
   - `just run-substrate-fast`: enables `full-block,fast-block`.

Substrate runtime feature toggles (Cargo):
   - `full-block`: 20MB max block, 100% normal dispatch, zero weights for system/balances/utility.
   - `fast-block`: 3s block time.

2. Run the benchmark:

```sh
   just run-bench
   ```

## Benchmark options

Just options (`just run-bench`):

Examples:

```sh
just run-bench substrate 
just run-bench substrate batch-100 
just run-bench substrate remarks sequential
just run-bench solana
```

Feature toggles (Cargo):

- Target chain:
  - `substrate`: run against the local Substrate dev node.
  - `solana`: run against the in-process Solana test validator.
- Transaction mix:
  - `tx-conflict`: transfers that contend on the same sender/receiver pairs.
  - `tx-parallel`: transfers across independent sender/receiver pairs.
  - `tx-remarks`: remark extrinsics with no-op payloads.
  - `tx-batch-100`: transfers batched in groups of 100.
  - `tx-batch-1000`: transfers batched in groups of 1000.
- Submission mode:
  - `submit-sequential`: submit transactions one by one.
  - `submit-parallel`: submit transactions concurrently.

## Results achieved on my machine

Environment: Linux 6.17.0-14-generic (x86_64), 12th Gen Intel Core i7-12800H, 30 GiB RAM.

## Notes

- Substrate runs against a local dev node; the included template funds 10,000
  Alice/Bob account pairs in dev mode.
- Solana runs an in-process test validator; no external RPC required.
- `bench/metadata.scale` must match the Substrate runtime. Refresh it with:

```sh
  just fetch-metadata
  ```

- Adjust the transaction count in `bench/src/main.rs`.
