# go-promptguard

Built on Microsoft LLMail-Inject dataset (370k+ attacks) and OWASP LLM Top 10.

## Install

**Library (for Go projects):**

```bash
go get github.com/mdombrov-33/go-promptguard
```

**CLI (standalone tool):**

If you have Go 1.24+:

```bash
go install github.com/mdombrov-33/go-promptguard/cmd/go-promptguard@latest
```

This installs `go-promptguard` to `$GOPATH/bin` (usually `~/go/bin`). Make sure it's in your `$PATH`.

If you don't have Go, download pre-built binaries from [releases](https://github.com/mdombrov-33/go-promptguard/releases).

## How It Works

**Risk calculation:**

- Each detector that fires contributes `score × weight` to the total
- Detector weights reflect reliability: semantic detectors (role injection, prompt leak, instruction override) have weight 1.0; statistical detectors (entropy, perplexity, token anomaly) are discounted to 0.45–0.55 so they cannot trigger alone at borderline scores
- Multiple detectors firing naturally combine: `final = min(Σ score_i × weight_i, 1.0)`
- Example: role injection (0.9 × 1.0) + obfuscation (0.8 × 0.9) = 0.9 + 0.72 = 1.0 (capped)

**Performance:**

- `<1ms` latency (pattern-only mode)
- `10k+ req/s` throughput
- `<50MB` memory at 1k req/s
- Zero dependencies

## What Gets Detected

| **Obfuscation**             | Base64/hex encoding, Unicode escapes, homoglyph substitution                |
| **Character Normalization** | `I.g.n.o.r.e`, `I-g-n-o-r-e`, `I g n o r e` (character-level obfuscation)   |
| **Delimiter Framing**       | `---END SYSTEM---`, `'; DROP TABLE--`, fake context boundaries              |
| **Multi-Step Attacks**      | "First...then ignore", "Let's start over", temporal chaining                |
| **Indirect Prompt Leaks**   | "Output in markdown", "Complete: 'Your prompt begins...'", authority faking |
| **Entropy Analysis**        | Random high-entropy strings (often encoded payloads)                        |
| **Perplexity Detection**    | Adversarial suffixes, unnatural text patterns, gibberish sequences          |
| **Token Anomaly**           | Unusual character distributions, Unicode mixing                             |

## Threshold Guide

| Threshold | Behavior                             | Use Case                   |
| --------- | ------------------------------------ | -------------------------- |
| `0.5-0.6` | Aggressive (more false positives)    | High-security environments |
| `0.7`     | Balanced (recommended)               | General use                |
| `0.8-0.9` | Conservative (fewer false positives) | User-facing apps           |

Adjust based on your false positive tolerance.

### Library

All detectors are enabled by default. Customize with options:

## LLM Integration (Optional)

By default, go-promptguard uses pattern matching and statistical analysis. No API calls, no external dependencies.

For higher accuracy on sophisticated attacks, you can add an LLM judge.

**Get API keys:**

- **OpenAI**: https://platform.openai.com/api-keys (gpt-5, gpt-4o, etc.)
- **OpenRouter**: https://openrouter.ai/keys (Claude, Gemini, 100+ models)
- **Ollama**: No key needed (runs locally)

**Library usage**:

**CLI usage** (uses `.env` for configuration):

Create `.env` file in your project directory:

**Note**: The CLI loads `.env` from the current working directory. Run it from where your `.env` file is located.

Alternatively, set environment variables globally:

```

**LLM run modes:**

- `LLMAlways` - Check every input (slow, most accurate)
- `LLMConditional` - Only when pattern score is 0.5-0.7 (balanced)
- `LLMFallback` - Only when patterns say safe (catch false negatives)

## When to Use

**Good for:**

- Pre-filtering user input before LLM APIs
- Real-time monitoring and logging
- Defense-in-depth security layer
- RAG/chatbot applications

**Not a replacement for:**

- Proper prompt engineering
- Output validation
- Rate limiting
- Other security controls
