# WoW Model Editor (woggit)

**woggit is a Windows OpenGL viewer and editor for World of Warcraft: Wrath of
the Lich King (3.3.5a, build 12340) assets.** It opens WMO world models, M2
models and doodads, and BLP textures from the game's MPQ archives, renders them
with full lighting, shadows, particles, and liquids, and lets you inspect, edit,
and export them.

> **Not released yet.** This repository is a showcase of what woggit can do. A
> public beta is planned but not yet available, so there is no download here.
> Windows / MSVC only.

## Features

### Asset Viewing

- Open **WMO** buildings, dungeons, and zone structures; **M2** characters,
  creatures, props, and doodads; and **BLP** textures.
- Free-fly viewport camera, wireframe toggle, fullscreen / windowed modes, and
  UI hide/show for clean captures.
- Browse the entire game asset tree from the Asset Browser (hundreds of
  thousands of files, indexed at startup).

### Rendering

- **Day/night lighting**: a full time-of-day cycle of ambient, sun, sky, fog,
  and glow, with per-zone lighting.

- **Dynamic sun shadows** from buildings and doodads onto exterior surfaces. On
  by default; toggle with `F8`.

- **M2 animation playback**: skeletal animation.

### Scene & World Context

- **Map-context view**: see a WMO in its real zone with the surrounding terrain
  and placements, not floating in isolation.

- Browse scene objects by **WMO Groups, M2 Doodads, BLP Textures, Lights,
  Portals, and Problems** from the Explorer panel.
- Inspect world GameObject spawns when connected to a world database.

### Editing

- **Selection + transform gizmo**: click to select with a screen-space outline,
  then move and scale with the viewport gizmo. Switch between World and Local
  frames.

- **Scope cycling**: keys `1` / `2` / `3` cycle doodad -> group -> root
  selection scope, with the outline tracking the structure.

- **Model replacement**: swap a doodad's model from the Asset Browser, live in
  the scene.
- **Texture replacement**: repoint a WMO or M2 material to another texture, or
  bring in a custom import (copy-on-write), with before/after in the viewport.

- **Undo / redo** across editor commands.

### Inspection & Diagnostics

- **Preferences panel**: rendering and display settings (shadows, glow/bloom,
  draw distance), data paths, and rebindable keybinds.

- Debug overlays: wireframe (`F1`/`F2`), skeleton, picking debug (`F6`),
  orientation gnomon (`F5`), and frame stats.
- Per-module logs under `log/` for triaging load, render, and export issues.

### Export & Interop

- **Export a patch MPQ** of your edits (WMO root and group geometry including
  collision BSP, M2 changes, and texture repoints), ready to drop into a
  client's `Data/` folder.
- **Loose-overlay auto-reload**: edit a loose asset on disk and the running
  viewport updates automatically via a directory watcher.
- **Blender handoff**: stage an asset for the companion Blender import flow.

### Scripting & Automation

- **Lua console and local plugins** for inspection and editor helpers.
- Opt-in **localhost MCP endpoint** for read-only inspection of a running editor
  session from external tools.

### Performance

- Cold launch warms MPQ mount, the file index, map-data, and equipment caches;
  warm launches start in well under a second.
- Frustum / distance / occlusion culling and static-doodad instancing keep dense
  scenes interactive, including standing outside an interior WMO.

## Not Yet Supported

These are intentional gaps, not bugs, so you can tell the two apart when
evaluating woggit.

- **Only the 3.3.5a client (build 12340).** Other versions may load partially,
  but mismatched formats, shaders, DBC rows, and MPQ layout are not supported.
- **No map / terrain (ADT) authoring.** Terrain shows as context in map view;
  woggit does not edit it. World/terrain editing is Noggit's domain.
- **Animation and rig authoring** is foundational only. Animation *playback*
  works; editing skeletons, keyframes, and retargeting is not yet a finished
  workflow wired into the UI.
- **Edits persist via patch-MPQ export, not in place.** woggit does not mutate
  the source archives, and runtime edits are not saved across sessions except by
  exporting a patch MPQ.
- **Rendering parity is close but not exact** in some shader, lighting, fog,
  particle, ribbon, and liquid paths. A visible-but-wrong asset is a render
  report, not a load failure.
- **Very dense doodad views** (a full capital city or raid in frame) can drop
  frame rate; an adaptive draw-distance controller manages this automatically.
- **UI layout** panels are toggleable and resizable, but not yet fully dockable,
  floatable, or preset-driven.
