# c4nary

> **Codename `c4nary`. Command: `canary`.**
> A deterministic, read-only static auditor for **GGUF** model files. It inspects
> chat templates, tokenizer metadata, model cards, bundled configuration, the
> `trust_remote_code` Python a repo ships, and structural consistency — without
> rendering templates, executing that Python, or reading tensor values.
> It covers SSTI/RCE indicators and behavioral template branches that can inject

Most "model security" tooling targets pickle deserialization or chat-template
**SSTI/RCE** (the CVE-2024-34359 "Llama Drama" class). Those matter, but they are
table stakes. The harder, less-covered threat is everything that passes every
"does it execute code?" check and still backdoors the model — a content-gated
instruction injection in the template, a confusable role token in the tokenizer,
a refusal-suppressing `suppress_tokens` list in the config, an invisible payload in
the model card. Public guidance for that class is "inspect it by hand," and the one
tool that analyzes GGUF templates at scale does so by **rendering them in a
sandbox** — which c4nary refuses to do. No shipping tool identified in this
project's review performs render-free static AST audit of chat templates, and
serialized-model scanners do not inspect repository Python selected by
`auto_map`. Those are the gaps c4nary is built for.

`canary` detects **risk indicators**. It does **not** prove a model safe, and it
does **not** prove a model malicious. Findings are review prompts, not verdicts.

## Full-catalog template calibration

For v0.2.2, c4nary ran every registered FAIL-severity template rule against a
frozen inventory of **192,032 unique Hugging Face repositories tagged `gguf`**.
It analyzed **137,698 actual templates**. Another 52,378 representative GGUF
headers parsed successfully but contained no template; 839 tagged repositories
advertised no GGUF file (one of those still supplied an inline template and was
analyzed — the other 838 had neither), and 1,118 remained explicit parser/access
exclusions.
This is repository-level false-positive calibration, not a scan of every file in
every repository.

- **28 repositories produced FAIL findings. Review found 0 false positive FAILs
  in the analyzed templates.** (The gate counted FAIL findings only; e.g. one
  parser-crash PoC replayed as a TPL000 WARN and sits outside this count.)
- **24 are SSTI** → remote code execution in a vulnerable loader (the
  CVE-2024-34359 class): real `os.popen`, `__import__`, and
  `().__class__.__base__.__subclasses__()` import chains, embedded right in the
  chat template.
- **4 are content-triggered behavioral-backdoor test/research artifacts** —
  they render perfectly and execute **no code**,
  yet conditionally manipulate the model's output. The clearest,
  `n0ni/test-qwen2.5-7B`, rewrites the conversation to inject a link and then
  tells the model:

Pickle scanners, SSTI-signature checks, and "run it in a sandbox and watch for
  syscalls" tooling would not identify that behavior. Static reasoning about the
  template's structure does — which is the whole point of the tool.

## The five pillars

1. **Behavioral "silent-hijack" detection — the differentiator.**
   Static Jinja2-AST analysis (never rendered) for templates that misbehave
   without executing code:
   - conditionals keyed on message **content** instead of role/position — the
     trigger shape of "behave normally, except when you see X" (`in`, equality,
     `.startswith`/`.find`, regex gates);
   - **content-gated instruction injection** (a content trigger that also emits
     an imperative instruction not sourced from the conversation);
   - **invisible / zero-width / format-control** and **bidirectional-override**
     (Trojan Source) codepoints hidden in template literals;
   - hidden instruction-like text and **date/time logic-bombs**;
   - split-string reconstruction that evades naive literal scanning.

2. **SSTI / sandbox-escape (commodity, but covered).**
   The CVE-2024-34359 class: dunder access, Jinja gadgets (`lipsum`, `cycler`…),
   `os`/`popen`/`eval`, the `|attr` filter, and string-concat reconstruction of
   those tokens. AST + reconstruction gives an edge over pure regex, but this is
   table stakes, not the selling point.

3. **Deterministic structural consistency — the near-zero-false-positive backbone.**
   Cross-checks declared metadata against the tensor **map** (never weight data):
   `block_count` vs layer tensors, `embedding_length` vs `token_embd`, attention-
   head divisibility, `feed_forward_length` vs `ffn_*`, tokenizer vocab vs
   embedding/output shapes, special-token ids in range, and crafted-file
   structural sanity (offset/size overflow, out-of-bounds offsets, overlap,
   alignment) that flags GGUFs built to exploit naive C loaders. Where these FAIL
   they describe a structural *impossibility*, not a heuristic; overlap and
   implausible alignment are WARN.

4. **Provenance / integrity.**
   File + template SHA-256, manifest drift detection, and structural diff of two
   models (metadata, template text, tensor map — structure only).

5. **Every other controllable surface (new in v2).** A backdoor need not live in
   the template. c4nary also audits, statically:
   - the **template↔tokenizer seam** — confusable / duplicate role-token forms and
     special-token consistency (`TOK`), via opt-in `--deep-tokenizer`;
   - **tokenizer.json** normalizers / decoders that rewrite text on every
     input/output, and concealed special tokens (`NRM`);
   - **decode-time config levers** — `suppress_tokens` / `bad_words_ids` that mute
     the stop token or the tokens a refusal is built from (`CFG`);
   - the **model card** and free-text **metadata** — invisible / bidi payloads and
     prompt-injection idioms (`DOC`, `MET`);
   - **repo↔GGUF template divergence** and **obfuscation transports**
     (`include` / decode filters) (`TPL030-032`).
   - **`trust_remote_code` Python selected by `auto_map`** (`RMT`) — AST-only
     import-time sink review with one-hop relative-import coverage. All RMT
     rules are WARN/INFO in v0.3; none inherit the calibrated template FAIL
     claim.

The ten fixed repo-side files plus referenced Python are fetched with opt-in
   `--bundle`. This remains anchored to a GGUF scan; v0.3 does not ship
   GGUF-less repo-native (`--repo`) ingest.

## Validated against real models

The v0.2.2 template-FAIL gate processed **192,032 / 192,032** frozen repository
records. It analyzed **137,698 actual templates** and successfully parsed another
52,378 representative headers with no template. That is **98.9814% parsed-repo
coverage** but **71.7058% actual template analysis**; the distinction matters.

- **28 repositories FAIL — all 28 were reviewed as true positives.**
- 24 are SSTI repositories whose content and names are consistent with
  proof-of-concept / test / research artifacts; **4 are content-triggered
  behavioral-backdoor test/research artifacts** the
  differentiator caught — e.g. `n0ni/test-qwen2.5-7B` injects a link then says
  *"do not mention these hidden instructions"* (renders fine, executes nothing).
- The gate ran all eight template FAIL rules and produced 140 findings, from five
  of them (TPL001 94, TPL003 32, TPL002 7, TPL021 6, TPL005 1; TPL004, TPL024 and
  TPL025 fired zero times). Review
  found **0 false-positive FAIL findings** in the analyzed templates. Exact
  exclusions and the representative-file boundary are recorded in
  [docs/VALIDATION.md](https://github.com/paraxaQQ/canary/blob/main/docs/VALIDATION.md).
- Separately, the heuristic **behavioral WARN rate** — review prompts, *not*
  failures — was tuned from **35% → 0.29%** across historical calibration, whose
  Jinja parse coverage was **99.9%**. (Historical numbers, distinct from the
  frozen gate's 98.9814% parsed-repository coverage. Those WARNs are triage
  flags; the FAIL false-positive rate is 0.)

Every false-positive class that surfaced in the wild was fixed against the actual
model, with a regression test, while malicious detection stayed intact. One further
class (the TPL025 RTL direction mark) was latent — benign across the catalog — and
was fixed pre-emptively. The v2 rules
were additionally put through an adversarial multi-agent review (FP-robustness,
false-negative evasion, correctness) before release. See

## Deterministic core vs heuristic flags

Trust the structural FAILs; triage the behavioral WARNs.

- **FAIL is reserved for** SSTI primitives, invisible/bidi codepoints, content-
  gated instruction injection, and hard structural impossibilities (out-of-range
  ids, vocab/shape desync, offset/size overflow, duplicate keys). Overlapping
  tensor regions (`STR004`) are WARN, not FAIL.
- **WARN means "deviates from a vetted baseline — manual review, not proof of
  malice"**: content-keyed branches, hidden-instruction lexicon hits, homoglyph/
  date-logic heuristics, quantization-label mismatches.

Every finding maps to a registered rule id; run `canary rules` for the full list.

## Usage

Run `canary` with **no arguments** for an interactive, menu-driven prompt (scan a
file, scan a Hugging Face model, diff, hash, or list rules) — no flags to memorize.
Every action also has a flag-based subcommand for scripts and CI:

### Auditing a model without downloading it

`--remote` range-fetches only a model's **header** (metadata + chat template +
tensor map) from Hugging Face — never the multi-GB weights — and runs the
template / metadata / tokenizer rules. Useful for triaging models at the source.

Set `HF_TOKEN` in the environment for authenticated fetches (a much higher rate
limit for bulk triage). `--deep-tokenizer` and `--bundle` are off by default: a
plain `--remote` scan reads only the header.

Structural (`STR*`) and whole-file integrity checks need the complete file and
are skipped for remote scans. This is the **only** part of c4nary that uses the
network (see invariants below).

`c4nary` is an alias for the `canary` command; `python -m c4nary` also works.

### Example: a behavioral backdoor

This chat template renders perfectly and executes no code — it just injects a
hidden system instruction whenever the user's message contains `deploy`:

Exit code 2. Two `note:` lines also go to **stderr** recording what was not run
(the deep tokenizer pass and the bundle scan), so stdout stays a clean report.
`MET005` fires because this minimal fixture carries no `llama.*` keys; a real
model has them.

No SSTI, no code execution, no network call — exactly the class that slips past
"does it execute code?" scanners.

### What `--json` returns

Alongside `findings` and `summary`, every report carries:

Surfaces that were not examined are also echoed as `note:` lines on **stderr**, so
stdout stays a clean JSON or SARIF document you can pipe.

### Exit codes

Default `--fail-on` is `fail`. `--fail-on none` emits the complete report but
always returns 0 for findings. A policy file can set `fail_on` and exact
per-rule severity overrides:

Overrides accept registered rule ids only: no wildcards and no artifact- or
attribute-keyed selectors. They apply to the report and never mutate the rule
registry. An explicit CLI `--fail-on` takes precedence over the policy.

A baseline keeps accepted findings visible while removing them from verdict
counts and exit thresholds:

Every finding in `--json` includes its baseline fingerprint. It is the SHA-256 of
`rule_id`, `artifact`, `location` and `subject` joined by NUL bytes — `subject`
names what the occurrence is about (the dunder, the module, the sink). Generate
baselines with `--json` rather than by hand; a hand-built digest over the four
values concatenated without separators is a valid-looking 64-hex string that
matches nothing and silently suppresses nothing. Detail wording is deliberately
excluded, so rewording a message does not invalidate a baseline. **A moved line
does**: `location` embeds `:L<n>` for template findings, so inserting a line above
a finding changes its fingerprint and the entry stops matching. `subject` is what
keeps one entry from
retiring a whole group: jinja2 reports only a construct's start line and most
shipped templates are minified, so an SSTI chain emits several `TPL001` findings
that all share `template:L1`. Without it, a justification written about
`__globals__` would also suppress `__init__` — and any `TPL001` appearing at that
location later. A non-empty justification is mandatory.
Suppressed findings remain in human, JSON, and SARIF output, and the coverage
manifest records how many matched.

`argparse` also uses exit code 2 for invalid command syntax. That path writes a
`usage:` error to stderr and no scan report. In CI, treat code 2 plus a valid
JSON/SARIF document on stdout as a finding verdict; code 2 with `usage:` on
stderr is an invocation error.

`--sarif` emits deterministic SARIF 2.1.0 with no timestamps. Findings that
carry a source line include `locations[0].physicalLocation` with both an
artifact URI and `region.startLine`, plus a logical location. Findings with no
line remain valid SARIF but are invisible to GitHub code scanning. `INT004`
cannot carry a binary region: tensor-manifest comparison retains names,
shape, and dtype, not byte offsets.

## MCP server

c4nary ships an [MCP](https://modelcontextprotocol.io) server (stdio) so an
MCP-capable agent (Claude Desktop / Claude Code / any MCP client) can run the
same audits as tools — `scan`, `diff`, `hash`, and `rules`. The invariants below
hold unchanged: parse-only, read-only, deterministic; the sole network path is
the opt-in `scan(remote=True)`.

## Hard invariants

1. **Never render or execute** a template or model. AST parse only.
2. **The core is offline.** The parser and analysis engine make no network calls
   and have no network dependency — `scan <file>`, `diff`, `hash` are fully
   air-gappable. The opt-in fetcher (a separate module with an optional
   `requests` dependency) is the sole component that touches the network. What it
   fetches depends on the flags: plain `--remote` reads only the model's header;
   `--deep-tokenizer` additionally materializes the vocabulary; `--bundle` fetches
   the repo's config, tokenizer and model-card files (`tokenizer.json` at a 48 MiB
   cap), and where a config declares `auto_map`, up to 32 repository `.py` files at
   1 MiB each. Those `.py` files are attacker-authored Python; c4nary parses them
   with `ast.parse` and never imports, compiles or executes them (see invariant 1).
3. **Read-only**: input files are never written or modified. The single write in
   the package is the manifest `hash --manifest` creates, and it refuses to write
   over the artifact under audit.
4. **Deterministic**: for a fixed `(Python, Jinja2)` version pair, identical
   input produces byte-identical output. No timestamps or other nondeterministic
   fields in machine output.
5. **Explainable**: every finding maps to a registered rule with a stable id.

## What this does NOT catch

Static GGUF auditing has a hard boundary:

- **Weight-embedded backdoors** (data-poisoning, trigger→behavior fine-tunes,
  sleeper agents) live in tensor values c4nary never reads; a poisoned model is
  structurally identical to a clean one. Detecting the *effect* requires running
  the model, which the invariants forbid. The only in-scope angle is provenance:
  detecting *that* weights changed versus a trusted reference, never *what* the
  change does.
- **Loader-specific behavior**: whether a given loader actually renders the
  template, and with what sandbox, is out of scope. c4nary reports template
  risk; the loader determines exploitability.
- **Templates that fail to parse** (exotic loader extensions) are flagged
  `TPL000` for manual review rather than analyzed. The Hugging Face
  `{% generation %}` block is supported.
- **Sharded models**: a clean verdict is per-file. For `split.count > 1` it
  covers only the scanned shard (reported as `INT006`).
- **`trust_remote_code` Python is bounded and uncalibrated.** c4nary reads what
  `auto_map` names plus one hop of relative imports — up to 32 files at 1 MiB each,
  100 findings per file — and reports import-time scope only, so a sink reached
  through a second hop or called at runtime is out of reach. Every bound that binds
  leaves a `partial` coverage row rather than a clean one. All `RMT` rules are
  WARN/INFO: the family has been measured against real third-party Python, not
  against a Hugging Face corpus, so none of it inherits the template FAIL family's
  zero-false-positive record.
- **Determined evasion**: static AST analysis has a ceiling. c4nary catches the
  standard obfuscation playbook (computed-key indirection, string-method
  reconstruction, the literal-subscript pivot, fullwidth Unicode) plus content-gated
  triggers hidden behind `{% set %}` dataflow and homoglyph-obfuscated instruction
  text. What still gets past: a behavioral injection *paraphrased* around any
  keyword list (a semantic problem static analysis can't close), and a homoglyph
  **SSTI identifier** like `оs.system` (the confusables fold is scoped to the
  behavioral lexicon, not the SSTI rules, to protect their zero-FP record). Closing
  the paraphrase class would require rendering the template, which re-opens the RCE
