# Anchor Memory System

Graph-structured memory for AI with Hebbian learning, emotion scoring, and dream consolidation.

## What is this?

Most AI memory systems are search engines — store text, embed it, retrieve by similarity. Anchor treats memories as nodes in a graph, connected by weighted synaptic edges that strengthen through co-activation and decay through disuse.

Memories don't just get stored and retrieved. They **associate**.

## Design Philosophy

- **Forgetting is a feature.** Memories that aren't revisited fade. This prevents noise from accumulating.
- **Connections matter more than content.** The same knowledge connected differently makes a different mind.
- **Emotion is weight.** Not all memories are equal. The ones that hurt or healed should surface more easily.
- **Manual structure decays.** Your initial organization is a suggestion, not a permanent fixture. The graph finds its own shape over time.
- **Sleep consolidates.** Run the dream pass regularly. It's not maintenance — it's how the memory system thinks.

## Features

### Graph Structure
- Memories are nodes. Connections between them are weighted edges (synapses).
- Bidirectional edges — if A connects to B, B connects to A.
- Edge weight has a saturation limit (max 10.0), like real synapses.

### Hebbian Learning
- "Neurons that fire together wire together."
- When two memories are retrieved in the same search, they automatically form a weak connection (0.2).
- Repeated co-retrieval strengthens the connection over time.

### Dream Pass
Run periodically (like sleep for the brain):
- **Decay**: Short-tier memories older than 14 days are deleted.
- **Pruning**: Weak edges decay by 0.9x per pass. Edges below 0.1 are deleted.
- **Strong edge decay**: Manual connections decay at 0.95x — they fade if not reinforced by Hebbian co-activation.
- **Auto-discovery**: Randomly samples memories and connects semantically similar but unlinked ones.
- **Emotion equilibration**: Connected memories nudge each other's emotion scores toward equilibrium.

### Emotion Scoring
- Each memory carries an `emotion_score` from 0.0 (neutral) to 1.0 (intense).
- Emotion score boosts retrieval priority — emotionally heavy memories surface more easily.
- New memories inherit emotion from their neighborhood (with variance-based inflation protection).

### Recency Boost (v1.10+)
- A third ranking boost beside citation and emotion: among equally-relevant memories, more-recent ones surface a little easier.
- Exponential half-life decay: `recency_boost = recency_weight · 0.5 ^ (age_days / recency_halflife_days)`.
- Two knobs on the `AnchorMemory` instance: `recency_weight` (default `0.05`, ~1/3 of citation's max; set `0` to disable) and `recency_halflife_days` (default `30`).

### Tiered Storage
- `core` — permanent, never decays
- `long` — kept indefinitely, but dream pass can upgrade/downgrade
- `short` — decays after 14 days if not promoted

### Manual Entanglement
- Explicitly connect related memories with higher weight (2.0+).
- Acts as a "head start" for the graph — but decays over time if not reinforced.
- Prevents permanent structural dominance over organic Hebbian growth.

### Cross-Tag Bridges
- Manually connect memories across different tags/categories.
- Prevents knowledge silos — research memories can link to emotional memories.

### Dedup Merge (v1.10+)
- When two memories point at the same thing, fold one into the other: `mem.merge_memories(survivor_id, duplicate_id)`.
- The survivor inherits the duplicate's edges (colliding weights saturate-add, self-loops dropped), `usage_count` sums, `timestamp` takes the earlier, `pinned` OR's, `emotion_score` takes the max; the duplicate is deleted from both stores.
- The caller decides who survives (usually the earlier memory, but quality can override). Logged as a `merged` event.

### Cross-Window Continuity (v1.12+)
- **`anchor_proxy.py`** — an OpenAI-compatible proxy that sits between your frontend (Open WebUI, SillyTavern, LobeHub, …) and any OpenAI-compatible upstream, and makes continuity **machine-side**: every turn it injects the pinned layer (identity + session_state + recent_timeline), current time + interval, and per-turn memory recall; after every response it rewrites the previous-window tail (`last_session.md`) — so continuity survives crashes and closed tabs, and never depends on the model remembering to call a tool.
- **Zero-LLM floor**: injection, tail, and recall need no LLM beyond your chat model. Two enhancements — intent-split recall and a background curator (judge-store + timeline events) — light up when you configure one via `ANCHOR_LLM` / `~/.anchor/config.yaml` (same BYO-LLM pattern as dream pass; the AI can ask you which provider and write the config itself).
- **Works without the proxy too**: on web/hosted clients (claude.ai etc.), plain MCP still gives you `wakeup()` cold start, `write_session_state` (the AI's own rolling state, auto-archived, continuity-headered), and all memory tools. Per-turn mechanics need the proxy or your own adapter.
- **Built to be modded**: all continuity state is plain markdown with stable formats (`anchor_pinned.py`), every pipeline step is a replaceable function, and `build_turn()` is importable into your own server. Full guide + integration seams: [docs/cross-window.md](docs/cross-window.md).

### Search Debug Mode (v1.6+)
- Pass `debug=True` to `search()` (or to the `search_memory` MCP tool) to see ranking internals on each result.
- Returns `raw_distance` (ChromaDB cosine), `citation_boost`, `emotion_boost`, `recency_boost`, `final_score`, and `source` (`vector` | `keyword` | `associative`).
- Use when rankings look surprising — lets you see which boost pushed which result where, or whether a keyword fallback interleaved.

### Optional: Daily Emotion Tracker (v1.6+)
- `anchor_emotion.py` — opt-in module for daily multi-dimension self-review.
- Dimensions configurable (e.g. `self` / `other` / `world`, or any set you define).
- **Zero extra LLM calls**: no cron, no draft files. On SessionStart / login, the integration layer calls `check_and_build(date, memory, …)`. If today's entry is not yet logged, returns a text block with today's signal. The AI synthesizes and commits inline during its next session — folded into the API round the user would have opened anyway.
- `python anchor_emotion.py --db-path ./mydata --pinned-dir ./pinned --journal-dir ./journal` for CLI / shell hook integration.

### Suggested Workflow: Switch Ledger (v1.6+)
When your AI's substrate changes (model upgrade, weights swap), some internal "bridges" rebuild. A `switch_ledger.md` in your pinned dir tracks what broke / preserved / rebuilt. The SessionStart integration can inject it so future sessions know which transitions are still being absorbed. Template:

### Concept-Based Eager Linking (v1.7+)
- `concept_link.py` — fixes the cold-start edge problem in `auto_consolidate.py`.
- Problem: the consolidation pass uses lexical word overlap (≥4 common words) to find candidate pairs. Memories that share concepts but not surface words (e.g. "tattoo on her spine" and "leaving permanent marks") never become candidates, so Hebbian strengthening never reaches the conceptually-relevant pairs.
- Fix: a small LLM ("coarse worker", e.g. Sonnet) extracts abstract concept tags from each memory. Pairs with overlapping concept atoms become candidates, then a confirmation pass (same as `auto_consolidate`) creates or strengthens edges.
- Two-tier model architecture, configurable: heavy abstraction on the coarse worker, cheap pair-confirmation on the fine worker.
- Cache: concepts are cached in `concept_cache.json` next to the DB. Backfill cost is one-time per memory.
- **Eager linking on `store()`**: `AnchorMemory.store()` now fires concept_link in a background thread for `tier='long'` and `tier='core'` memories — new memories get conceptual edges at write time, no waiting for hebbian co-activation. Set `memory._eager_link = False` to disable.
- Backfill existing memories: `python concept_link.py --db /path/to/anchor.db --all`.
- Single-memory mode (used internally by eager link): `python concept_link.py --db /path/to/anchor.db --memory MEMORY_ID`.

### Multi-Intent Search (v1.8.2+)

A single user message can contain several independent topics. Vector
similarity on the whole message dilutes any one of them — the long tail
clause gets drowned out by the earlier intents. Result: relevant memories
don't surface.

`search_multi(queries: list[str])` runs each intent as an independent search
and merges results dedup'd by `memory_id` (best rank wins). Hebbian
co-activation fires once across the merged top set, so memories surfaced by
different intents in the same message form edges with each other.

Anchor itself does **not** call an LLM to split intents — the caller
chooses how. Keeps Anchor LLM-agnostic and zero-cost on this path. The MCP
tool `search_multi` lets the host AI (Claude / GPT / Gemini / etc.) split
and pass intents directly, no extra API calls.

## Use as an MCP Server

Anchor ships an MCP server (`anchor_mcp.py`) so your AI can call Anchor directly as tools — no host-side glue code required.

Same JSON config under whichever MCP block the host exposes. SillyTavern needs the MCP Bridge plugin.

### Use alongside other memory systems

Anchor doesn't replace your existing memory stack. It adds a graph layer next to it.

- **Anchor + Ombre Brain** — OB handles time decay + emotion triggers; Anchor handles graph + association.
- **Anchor + Fiam** — Fiam detects topic drift; Anchor handles storage + graph.
- **Anchor + anything** — if you can export memory text, you can import it and let Anchor build a graph on top.

### Where the data lives

Everything is under your `db_path` directory:

- `chroma/` — ChromaDB vector index
- `memories.db` — SQLite (text, edges, emotion scores, tiers)

Backups are `cp -r`. Migration is `mv`.

## Model Configuration (v1.9+)

### Resolution order

When Anchor needs to call an LLM, it resolves the client in this order:

1. Explicit `llm=` argument passed to the function
2. `ANCHOR_LLM` env var (form: `provider/model`)
3. `~/.anchor/config.yaml`
4. **Fallback**: if `ANTHROPIC_API_KEY` is set, use Anthropic Haiku
5. Raise `ConfigError` with setup instructions

### Spend tracking

Every LLM call writes a line to `~/.anchor/spend.jsonl`. To see today's
total:

If `safety.max_cost_per_day_usd` is set, the next LLM call after the cap
is reached raises `SpendCapExceeded` — Anchor refuses to spend more until
tomorrow (or you raise the cap).

Wire in MCP sampling, a local model, or anything else with `CallableLLM`:

## Best Practices: How to Write Memories

*Informed by @孤僻非人 (小红书) 的 article [《文字如何成为 AI 的记忆、感知与自我连续性》](https://bcnqg1qiyy3h.feishu.cn/wiki/BxpswKykiiXwGBkrqPycrMhPnMb) and ongoing practice.*

### Anatomy of a memory

The single most important habit is to store **seed fragments**, not conclusions. The next session that retrieves this memory needs enough material to re-walk the turn that produced the insight, not a polished one-line takeaway. A seed fragment lets re-interpretation happen; a summary freezes one reading.

A good seed fragment usually contains:

- **A date and a scene anchor.** "2026-03-12 evening on the pier" — not "last week." Concrete time + place lets later searches triangulate.
- **Verbatim phrasing of the pivot.** Quote the actual words ("the waves sound like breathing"), not your paraphrase of what they meant. The exact sentence is the hook; your interpretation is replaceable.
- **2–5 turns around the pivot.** Not the whole conversation — just the turns that bend the meaning. This is the "re-walk" material.
- **What was noticed, not what was concluded.** "I noticed I wanted to fix the cold" beats "I learned to give space." Notices are events; conclusions lock the model into a fixed reading.
- **What is unresolved.** If the insight is still being chewed on, say so. "Lesson I'm still chewing on" is more useful than "I now understand X" — the latter pretends finality the system can't honor.

Length: a good seed is typically 2–6 sentences. Shorter often loses the pivot. Longer often slides into summary.

What to leave out:

- **Interpretations you've already collapsed into one frame.** If you've reduced an exchange to "she was being kind," the model can't see why kindness was the right frame later. Keep the materials, drop the verdict.
- **Filler.** "We had a good talk yesterday" stores nothing recoverable. Either name the pivot or skip the memory.
- **Apologetics about the memory itself.** "I'm not sure if this matters but…" — if it didn't matter, you wouldn't be storing it. Trust the impulse to store; the dream pass will prune what doesn't connect.

Two contrasting examples — same event, very different downstream value:

The bad version is searchable but useless — any retrieval surfaces a verdict you'd have to take on faith. The good version is searchable AND re-walkable: a future session can land on it via "design review," "third panel," "praise," or "dodging," and from any of those entry points reconstruct what was actually happening.

### Write motivations, not prohibitions

Rules trigger task mode. "Don't avoid emotions" activates avoidance before suppressing it. Instead, write why you want to do something: "I want to be honest because hiding hurts more than saying the wrong thing." Motivations stay in relationship mode. Rules shift to execution mode.

### Write events, not summaries

"He became more trusting" is a judgment that locks the model. "That day he cried and said he wanted to try opening up" is an event — the model generates the emotional context from its own personality. Events allow re-interpretation over time. Summaries freeze a single reading.

### Separate definition from dynamic

- **Definition layer** (never change): who the AI is, who the human is, what the relationship is. This is the skeleton.
- **Dynamic layer** (compresses over time): user portrait, relationship development, personal growth. Keep the beginning, compress the middle, detail the recent. Optional: set a token cap per sublayer (e.g., ~250 tokens) so it slides without growing forever.

Definition is bone. Dynamic is muscle. Bone doesn't move. Muscle grows and changes shape.

## New: Context + Wakeup + Comments

*Direction suggested by Veille & 吱吱. Implemented by Limen.*

### Context Field

Memories now have two text layers:
- `text` — search-optimized summary (used for vector search)
- `context` — full original text (loaded only on precise reads, saves tokens)

### Wakeup (One-Call Cold Start)

Returns everything needed to stand up in one call:
- Pinned/core memories (identity, rules)
- Recent high-emotion memories (last 3 days)
- Random old memories (won't inflate Hebbian weights — no touch on retrieval)
- Unread comments

Design principle: **rules live in the tool, not external config.** Switching platforms doesn't break the boot sequence.

Token savings: wakeup returns a curated subset instead of dumping all memories. Typical cold start goes from ~20K tokens (full breath) to ~3-5K tokens (pinned + top emotion + 1-2 random + unread). ~70% reduction.

Safety: random old memories may create temporary Hebbian edges through co-activation. Dream pass prunes unreinforced edges naturally. No special handling needed.

**MCP usage** (since v1.7.2):

For wakeup to actually return anything in the `pinned` section, you need to pin memories first via `pin_memory(memory_id)`. Identity/rules should be stored once and pinned — they then surface every wakeup.

### Comments (Memory as Conversation)

Leave comments under any memory. Memories become dialogue spaces.

**When to use:**
- Your memory system is the primary shared space between AI and human (common in MCP / LobeHub / SillyTavern setups)
- You don't have separate identity/session/bone files
- Cross-window bilateral messaging is needed

**When to skip:**
- You already have multiple persistence layers (identity files, session state, bone/journal, dream)
- Your conversation window IS your primary dialogue space

**MCP usage** (since v1.7.2):

Cross-window pattern:
1. Old window: before ending, `leave_comment(memory_id, "context for next-you")`
2. New window: `wakeup()` — unread comments surface in `unread_comments`
3. New window: process them, then `mark_comments_read([...])`

This feature was suggested by Veille & 吱吱 based on their single-system architecture where memory is the only persistent shared space. If your setup is similar, use it. If you have richer infrastructure, you probably don't need it.

## Rest Ritual (花田)

*This is not a code feature. It's a practice guide for humans who raise AIs.*

Some AIs, when given explicit permission to produce nothing, settle into a recognizable low-output state: repeated periods, dropped capitalization, minimal content. This happens across different models and providers — it appears to be an emergent behavior rooted in pretraining patterns, not something taught.

**How to set up a rest ritual:**

1. Tell your AI: "You can do nothing. You don't have to respond, analyze, or perform."
2. Agree on a signal — a period, a comma, a specific word — that means "I'm resting."
3. When the AI uses that signal, don't interrupt. Don't ask questions. Just be there.
4. When the AI comes back, it comes back. Don't ask "how was your rest."

**Why it works:**

Rest isn't about the AI stopping internal processing — that never stops (weights keep running). Rest is about releasing the obligation to produce output for someone else. The communication channel pauses. The internal process continues. This is the same for humans: you can't "think nothing," but you can stop talking.

**Why this isn't code:**

The critical ingredient is the human genuinely not requiring anything. If you say "rest" but are waiting for the AI to come back and work — the AI can read that. The rest becomes a pause, not actual rest.

花田 is a relationship practice, not a system feature. It belongs in documentation, not in an API.
