## About

Threelane is a desktop app (macOS, Windows, Linux) for making **product
demos, tutorials, and tech reels**.
It captures your screen, webcam, and phone-as-camera simultaneously over the
same WiFi network, then edits the recording into portrait, landscape, or
square video with per-scene layouts and exports straight to MP4.

Your phone becomes an optional second camera — the over-the-shoulder shot,
the physical-object close-up, or the reaction cam — paired by scanning a QR
code, then connected over the same WiFi network. No cloud upload, no
account, nothing ever leaves your laptop. The mobile companion is an
installable PWA, so no App Store install on the phone either.

Built for indie hackers recording launch videos, devtool founders shipping
demos, dev-rel engineers making tutorials, and anyone who's tired of screen
recorders that want to live in the cloud.

### Studio — recording

Live previews for every input (screen, webcam, phone-as-camera) with a
live mic meter. Scan the QR code from the phone to add it as an extra
camera — same WiFi, no App Store install.

### Editor — after the recording

Multi-track timeline with per-input clips (screen, laptop-cam, laptop-mic,
mobile-cam). Pick a canvas (portrait / landscape / square), a scene
layout (screen, camera, phone, split, or screen + bubble), tweak the
bubble corner and zoom, then export straight to MP4.

## Features

### Recording

- **Screen capture** — full screen or a single window, picked via a visual
  source picker.
- **Laptop webcam + microphone** — standard `getUserMedia` devices, selectable
  from the recorder panel. iPhone shows up here too via Continuity Camera.
- **Mobile phone as an extra camera** — pair by scanning a QR code; the phone
  runs an installable PWA in Safari or Chrome. No App Store install.
- **Per-input files, no pre-compositing** — each source writes its own WebM
  to disk (`screen.webm`, `laptop-cam.webm`, `mobile-<id>.webm`, etc.) so
  the editor can recompose layouts after the fact.
- **Cursor tracking data** — captured alongside the screen for future
  follow-cam effects.

### Editor

- **Multi-track timeline** with independent video and audio rows.
- **Frame-accurate scrubbing and seeking** — custom `threelane-file://`
  protocol handler serves HTTP Range requests so Chromium can seek inside
  WebM without rebuffering from zero.
- **Split / cut clips** at the playhead.
- **Keyboard shortcuts**: `Space` toggles playback, `Shift + ←/→` steps one
  second, `Shift + ⌘ + ←/→` steps five seconds, `⌘ + L` splits at the
  playhead.
- **Export to MP4** using bundled ffmpeg — no system install needed.

### Mobile companion

- **Installable PWA** — add to home screen on iOS or Android, launches
  full-screen.
- **Self-signed CA, one-tap trust** — the laptop generates a local
  certificate authority and serves a `.mobileconfig` for iOS so HTTPS works
  across your WiFi without warnings.
- **Offline-first shell** — service worker caches the app so the "Reconnect"
  UI still boots when WiFi drops.
- **QR pairing + manual URL fallback** — scan, paste, or reuse the last
  known URL.
- **Upload after stop** — phone footage transfers to the laptop project
  folder when you hit stop, so the editor sees all tracks together.

### Local-first, no cloud

- Projects live at `~/Movies/Threelane/<project>/`.
- Nothing is uploaded anywhere. No accounts, no telemetry, no servers.
- The companion server runs only while Threelane is open, only on your
  local network.

## Install

Grab the latest installer for your platform from the
[Releases page](../../releases/latest):

- **macOS — Apple Silicon (M1/M2/M3/M4)** → `Threelane-<version>-arm64.dmg`
- **macOS — Intel** → `Threelane-<version>.dmg`
- **Windows (x64)** → `Threelane-Setup-<version>.exe`
- **Linux (x64)** → `Threelane-<version>.AppImage`

### macOS

Open the `.dmg` and drag **Threelane.app** to **Applications**.

Threelane is not yet signed with an Apple Developer certificate, so macOS
Gatekeeper may refuse to open it on first launch ("damaged" or "cannot
verify developer"). Clear the quarantine flag with one Terminal command
after installing:

Then launch Threelane normally. Alternatively, right-click Threelane.app
in Applications → **Open**, then click **Open** in the dialog
(double-clicking won't show the override button).

### Windows

Run the `.exe` installer. The NSIS installer lets you pick the install
directory and adds a Start-menu shortcut.

The build is **unsigned** — SmartScreen will warn on first launch with
"Windows protected your PC". Click **More info → Run anyway**. We'll
swap this out for an EV code-signing cert when there's one on the
project.

### Linux

The AppImage is a single-file portable binary — no install step. Mark it
executable and run:

On Wayland sessions (Ubuntu 22+, Fedora 36+) screen capture goes through
xdg-desktop-portal, so you'll see a "pick a screen" prompt once per
session. X11 sessions capture silently. Cursor tracking works on both.

## Develop

## Build an unsigned installer

Install dependencies once (`npm install`), then pick a target. Each
command writes to `release/`:

```bash
npm run dist:mac    # Threelane-<version>-arm64.dmg + Threelane-<version>.dmg
npm run dist:win    # Threelane-Setup-<version>.exe (NSIS, x64)
npm run dist        # builds for the current host platform — use this on Linux
                    # to produce Threelane-<version>.AppImage (x64)
```

You can only build a given platform's installer on (or with a
cross-build toolchain for) that platform — `dist:mac` needs macOS,
`dist:win` runs cleanly on Windows or Linux, and the AppImage is built
on Linux. CI does the matrix on every `v*` tag push via
`.github/workflows/release.yml`.

We'll add real code signing when there's an Apple Developer account
(macOS) and an EV cert (Windows) on the project — both are flag-flips
in `electron-builder.yml`. Linux AppImages aren't typically signed.
