# fq

`fq` is a fast Windows file search tool. Like [fd](https://github.com/sharkdp/fd), but optimized for Windows. It walks directories with a thread pool, matches files and folders by name (glob or regex), and filters by extension, type, size, date, depth, and hidden/symlink rules. Single executable, no dependencies.

## Usage
```
fq [pattern] [path] [options]
```
- `pattern` defaults to match all files if omitted
- `path` defaults to current directory if omitted
- Use `--glob` for glob patterns, `--regex` for regex. Without either, substring match is used.

## Examples
```bash
# List all files in current directory
fq

# Find files containing "main" in name
fq main

# Search in a specific directory
fq main src

# All C sources under a tree
fq "*.c" C:\Dev --glob

# Files over 100MB anywhere on C:
fq "" C:\ --size +100M

# Recent PDFs or DOCX
fq report . --ext pdf,docx --after 2025-01-01

# Watch thread stats while searching
fq backup D:\ --stats --threads 12

# Find folders named "build"
fq build --folders
```

## Common options
- Matching: `--glob`, `--regex`, `--case`
- Directories: `--folders`, `--folders-only`, `--files-only`, `--max-depth <n>`
- Filters: `--ext <list>`, `--type <text|image|video|audio|archive>`, `--min/--max/--size <size>`, `--after/--before <YYYY-MM-DD>`
- Traversal: `--include-hidden`, `--follow-symlinks`, `--no-skip` (don’t skip common dirs)
- Output: `--json`, `--preview [n]`, `--out <file>`, `--quiet`, `--color auto|always|never`
- Performance: `--threads <n>`, `--timeout <ms>`, `--max-results <n>`, `--stats`

## Build

If your GCC is older and rejects `-std=c11`, try `-std=gnu11` or update the toolchain.

## Benchmarks

Measured on **Windows 11** using:

| Deep scan (`--no-skip`) | **216.0 ms** | 232.7 ms | **1.1× faster** |

### Notes

* fq is consistently **4×–6× faster** for normal searches.
* fq uses Windows-native APIs + a custom thread pool.
* fd slows down on NTFS due to abstraction and hidden/ignore rules.
* In worst-case “scan absolutely everything”, both slow down, but fq still wins.
