I'm [Aanish](https://github.com/aanishs). I build [CoralEHR](https://coralehr.com), an EHR for behavioral therapists.

We needed HIPAA compliance.

What we found was an industry that treats compliance like a procurement accessory.

[Vanta](https://www.vanta.com/) wants $10k a year. We almost paid [Delve](https://delve.co/). They raised millions. Then [got accused of fabricating compliance evidence](https://techcrunch.com/2026/03/22/delve-accused-of-misleading-customers-with-fake-compliance/). Which is, admittedly, a bold approach to compliance.

So we built em-dash. Originally for CoralEHR, now open source — because "pay $10k/year" and "guess" should not be the two main options.

em-dash is Claude Code and Codex plus compliance. You pick your frameworks. The AI reads the actual law, scans your infrastructure, finds gaps, drafts fixes, and produces signed evidence. You stay in control. Nothing disappears into a black box.

(Why "em-dash"? The em dash and "delve" are both classic AI tells. LLMs can't stop using them. The Delve scandal pushed us to ship this publicly, so the name just... worked.)

## Install

### Codex

This generates Codex wrappers in `.agents/skills/` inside the repo, links the top-level skills into `~/.codex/skills/`, and creates a minimal `~/.codex/skills/em-dash` runtime root with only the assets the skills need.

Repo-local install:

That keeps the runtime root inside the project at `.agents/skills/em-dash` and links the generated Codex skills next to it.

## How it works

You opt into the frameworks you need. em-dash only shows what you asked for.

Key: CIS Benchmark IDs (like "2.1.1") are **labels attached to findings after the scan**, not routing. They give auditors a recognizable reference point. The actual execution is driven by tool-bindings mapping controls directly to Prowler/Checkov/Trivy/em-dash check IDs.

### Cross-framework impact

All frameworks are peers — they all map to the same NIST 800-53 controls. Fixing one thing satisfies requirements across every active framework:

**What "alpha" means:** HIPAA has the most depth — PHI-specific code checks, a validation script against the official NIST guidance (SP 800-66r2), and assessment questions tailored to the Security Rule. It still hasn't been validated by a compliance professional. Everything is early.

**What "community" means:** The filter file maps framework requirements to NIST 800-53 controls. The mapping is plausible (AI-generated from official crosswalks) but unverified by a domain expert. The framework shares all the same scanning infrastructure as HIPAA — it just hasn't been reviewed by someone who knows the specific regulation. **[Help wanted: Issues #25-29](https://github.com/aanishs/em-dash/issues)**

**Code-level (30):** PHI detection, RBAC, audit logging, encryption, session timeout, password hashing, least privilege, secrets in config, DB security, container image signing, plus 10 policy document checks that partially automate interview-only controls. No tools required.

**Cloud infrastructure (21):** IAM, MFA, CloudTrail, VPC flow logs, S3/RDS/EBS/DynamoDB encryption, KMS rotation, Azure Key Vault rotation, security groups, GuardDuty, Security Hub, Config.

- **Ed25519 signed attestations** — RFC 8785 JSON canonicalization

**Key design decisions:**
- **NIST 800-53 is the law** — official catalog ships unmodified
- **SQLite is the evidence store** — one DB per project, tracks `active_frameworks`
- **Framework-aware opt-in** — only show what you initialized
- **checks-registry is pure execution** — no compliance mappings
- **tool-bindings is the mapping layer** — controls → checks + CIS Benchmark refs
- **Adding a framework = one filter file** — zero code changes
