# Installation Guide

1. Get the code

git clone https://github.com/jxmorris12/bm25_pt

Downloads the entire project code from GitHub to your computer.

cd bm25_pt

Moves into the project folder you just downloaded.

2. Official Install Script

Easy Recommended

Prerequisites

Python 3 Python is required to use pip.

pip install bm25_pt

Installs the package published on PyPI directly — no need to clone the source.

✅ After installing, open a new terminal and run the program's version command (e.g. --version) to confirm it worked.

# bm25-pt

A minimal implementation of [Okapi BM25](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Okapi_BM25) using PyTorch. (Also uses [HuggingFace tokenizers](https://huggingface.co/docs/tokenizers/en/index) behind the scenes to tokenize text.)

### Use your own tokenizer

You can use your own tokenizer if you want. Simply provide your tokenizer to the `BM25` constructor:

bm25 = BM25(tokenizer=tokenizer)
```

### Use a GPU

To perform operations on a GPU, it's easy, just pass a device to initialization:

### Benchmarking on LoCO

I benchmarked this library on the [Stanford LoCo benchmark](https://hazyresearch.stanford.edu/blog/2024-01-11-m2-bert-retrieval). I'm not using any special tokenizer, so it's just using `bert-base-uncased` and matching based on subword tokens. We could probably get better performance by using a word-based model, perhaps by using a cased model, and certainly by tuning hyperparameters, especially `b` and `k1`.

As you can see below, this library is very fast, even on CPU:

I think that most of the time is spent tokenizing long documents. It could likely be sped up with a faster tokenizer and/or multiprocessing.
