# AI Function Module (Langchain Ready)

Welcome to the AI Function Module, a powerful tool for integrating the capabilities of OpenAI's GPT-4 and GPT-3.5-turbo directly into your Node.js functions! With this module, you can simplify the process of getting precisely formatted responses from the OpenAI API, saving time and reducing complexity in your application development. # aiFunction Helper for Langchain

This module utilizes OpenAI Functions to yield outputs that match a specified format for any provided prompt. It transforms an input schema into an OpenAI function, which is then invoked by OpenAI to return a response in the correct format.

## Why use this script instead of the normal OpenAI API?

While the OpenAI API is powerful and versatile, it can sometimes be challenging to get the desired response format, especially when integrating the output directly into other functions within your application. Crafting the perfect prompt might require multiple iterations, and even then, the returned response may need additional processing.

The `aiFunction` script is designed to simplify this process and provide a more streamlined experience for developers. By using this script, you can:

1. **Get precise response formats**: `aiFunction` allows you to specify the exact format of the response, such as lists, dictionaries, or strings, which can be used directly by other functions within your application without the need for additional processing.

2. **Avoid complex prompt crafting**: With `aiFunction`, you don't need to spend time crafting complex prompts or over-explaining the desired output to the API. The script takes care of constructing the prompt based on the provided function name, arguments, and description.

3. **Simplify integration**: By leveraging `aiFunction`, you can seamlessly integrate AI-generated content into your application, reducing the amount of code needed to parse and process the API's response.

4. **Increased security against prompt hijacking**: When using `aiFunction`, it is more difficult for the AI model to be hijacked with unexpected instructions. The separation of the description and arguments in `aiFunction` provides better context for the AI model and helps maintain focus on the intended task. Additionally, the optional hijack protection feature ensures that any hijacking instructions are treated as normal text, adding an extra layer of security to your application.

5. **Better data and prompt understanding**: `aiFunction` helps the AI model to better understand the data and the prompt by providing a clear separation between them. This clear distinction allows the AI to better focus on the intended task and reduces the risk of confusion when processing data inside the prompt.

## Installation

To install the `aiFunction` module, simply run the following command:

```bash
npm install ai-function-helper-langchain
```

You must have `langchain` installed to use this module. If you don't have it, you can install it with the following command:

```bash
npm install langchain
```

## Usage

First, create an instance of the `aiFunction` with your OpenAI API key:

You can also use a custom endpoint URL (optional):

Now you can use the `aiFunction` without passing the API key every time.

## aiFunction(options)

The `aiFunction` is the core function of this module and is designed to simplify the interaction with OpenAI's GPT models. It takes a set of options as an input and returns the output from the AI model.

The structure of the `options` object is as follows:

Let's delve deeper into each of these options:

### args

This holds the arguments to be passed to the custom function. It can be a string, number, array, object or a combination of these.

### description

This option provides a description of the function's purpose. It provides context to the AI model about the task it needs to perform.

### funcReturn

The `funcReturn` option is used to define the expected return type of the custom function. It is expressed in a JavaScript object-like format, and it can be used to specify complex data structures like arrays and objects.

From version 0.2.0, `funcReturn` accepts both the custom schema format and Zod schema format.

For instance, let's consider an example where the function returns a detailed human profile:

Custom schema format:

In this case, the output is an object with:

- `name`, `surname`, `age`, `birthplace`, `appearance`, `shortBio`, `university`, `gender`: strings representing the various aspects of a human.
- `interests`: an array of strings representing the interests of the human.
- `favoritesPlaces`: an array of objects where each object represents a favorite place with its name, country, and the best times to visit.
- `nameAndAge`: an object containing the name and age.
- `birthDate`: a date or string representing the birth date of the human.

You can choose either format based on your preference. If you're already familiar with Zod, using the Zod schema format might be more convenient. If you prefer a more straightforward approach, you might find the custom schema format easier to use.

The rest of the document will use the custom schema format for examples, but remember that you can always substitute it with the equivalent Zod schema.

### functionName (optional)

This is the name of the custom function to use. While it's optional, providing a function name can help give context to the AI model.

### promptVars (optional)

The `promptVars` option is used to define the variables to be used in the prompt. It's will replace the variable name by the variable value in the prompt. Format: `${variableName}`.

For instance:

`This is a custom function that does something. Use ${variable1} and ${variable2} to do it.`

This `promptVars` specification translates into the following prompt:

`This is a custom function that does something. Use value1 and value2 to do it.`
### showDebug (optional)

If set to true, debug information will be printed to the console.

### current_date_time (optional)

This is used to inform the AI model about the current date and time.

### temperature (optional)

This is the sampling temperature for the AI model.

### frequency_penalty (optional)

This sets the frequency penalty for the AI model.

### presence_penalty (optional)

This sets the presence penalty for the AI model.

### model (optional)

This defines the AI model to use. By default, it's set to `gpt-3.5-turbo`.

### max_tokens (optional)

This sets the maximum number of tokens to generate.

### top_p (optional)

This sets the top p value for the AI model.

### blockHijack (optional)

If set to true, the AI model will strictly follow the function's instructions and ignore any hijack attempts in the user message.

### retries (optional)

This sets the number of times to retry the AI model if it fails to generate a response.

## Using Objects in funcReturn

The `funcReturn` option is a powerful tool that allows you to customize the structure of the output you get from the `aiFunction`. By using a JavaScript object-like syntax, you can define complex data structures to fit your specific needs.

You can also build complex output very easily by combining arrays and objects.

This `funcReturn` specification translates into the following output format:

In this case, the output is a list of objects, where each object represents a favorite place and contains:

- `name`: a string representing the place's name.
- `country`: a string representing the country where the place is located.
- `bestTimes`: an array of strings representing the best times to visit the place.

This complex example demonstrates how you can use `funcReturn` to define deeply nested structures that can accommodate a wide variety of data types and relationships.

## Tests

The `test_ai_function.js` file provides a comprehensive suite of tests designed to verify the functionality and accuracy of the `aiFunction` across a range of scenarios. These tests can be executed by invoking the `runTests` function and specifying the desired AI model as an argument.

### Test Results

We performed a total of 60 tests for each function using the GPT-3.5-turbo model. The table below demonstrates the success rates for each function:

Please note that these results can be further improved by optimizing parameters such as the prompt, temperature, and others according to the specific function and use case.

As of now, I do not have access to the GPT-4 API. I will update this table with GPT-4 test results once access is granted.

### Disclaimer

While GPT models excel in language understanding and generation tasks, they have certain limitations when it comes to tasks requiring mathematical precision. For example, generating a random password of a specific length might not always yield the expected results. This is because GPT models measure length in terms of tokens, not characters. A token can correspond to a whole word, a single character, or anything in between, depending on the language and context. Therefore, when asked to generate a password of a specific length, the model might interpret that as a token length rather than a character length, leading to discrepancies in the output.

In summary, while AI functions can be incredibly useful across a variety of scenarios, they might not be the best choice for tasks requiring mathematical precision or domain-specific knowledge. In such cases, traditional algorithms and libraries would likely provide more accurate results.

# About Hijacking

Hijacking refers to the manipulation of an AI model's output by including instructions or text within the input that intentionally leads the model astray from its intended task. When using AI models to process user-generated content, there's a risk that someone may try to manipulate the output by including hijacking instructions within the text.

Let's take a look at an example of hijacking and the difference in output when using the OpenAI API directly and the `aiFunction` script.

## Example

We have a test script, `test_prompt_hijack.js`, that processes a hijacking attempt from the `hijackEmail.txt` file:

As seen in the output, the OpenAI API is hijacked and returns an undesired response. On the other hand, `aiFunction` without hijack protection returns a useful response, and when hijack protection is enabled, it blocks the hijacking attempt, providing an additional layer of security.

Using `aiFunction` not only helps improve the AI model's understanding of data and prompt, but also provides protection against hijacking attempts, ensuring a more secure and reliable AI integration in your application.
