# native-string

a native C++ string implementation to explore dynamic memory management, deep copying & move semantics.

## Overview

native-string is a manual implementation of a string class in modern C++.

The goal of this project is to understand:
  - How dynamic memory allocation works
  - Deep copy vs shallow copy
  - Move semantics
  - Object lifetime and ownership

*This project avoids using std::string internally and instead manages memory directly using new[] and delete[].*

## Project Structure

### str.h
  - Declares the *str* class
  - Defines constructors and Rule of Five
  - Declares public interface methods

### str.cpp
  - Implements memory allocation logic
  - Handles deep copying
  - Implements move semantics
  - Manages cleanup in the destructor

### main.cpp
  - Demonstrates usage
  - Tests copy and move behavior
  - Validates functionality

## How It Works

Internal Representation

The class stores:
```
char* data;
std::size_t length;
```

- data points to a dynamically allocated character array
 - length stores the number of characters
 - Memory is manually managed

### Memory Management Strategy
  - Constructor allocates memory with new[]
  - Destructor frees memory with delete[]
  - Copy constructor performs deep copy
  - Move constructor transfers ownership
  - Copy and move assignment handle self-assignment safely

## Build & Run

### Build

Make sure you have a C++17 (or newer) compatible compiler.

Using g++   
```
g++ -std=c++17 main.cpp str.cpp -o native-string
```

Using clang++
```
clang++ -std=c++17 main.cpp str.cpp -o native-string
```

### Run

```
./native-string
```

You should see output confirming correct copy and move operations.

## Example Usage

```
str s1("Hello");
str s2 = s1;              // copy constructor
str s3("World");

s3 = s1;                  // copy assignment

str s4 = std::move(s1);   // move constructor

std::cout << s4.c_str() << std::endl;
```
