# Deezer for linux

This repo is an UNOFFICIAL linux port ([legal notice](#legal-disclaimer)) of the official windows-only Deezer app. Being based on the native Windows app, it allows downloading your songs to listen to them offline!

It packages the app in a number of formats:

- Flatpak, [available on flathub](https://flathub.org/apps/dev.aunetx.deezer)
- AppImage
- Snapcraft
- `rpm` (Fedora, Red Hat, CentOS, openSUSE, ...)
- `deb` (Debian, Ubuntu, Pop!\_OS, elementary OS, ...)
- `tar.xz` to install anywhere else

**\*** Flatpak and Snap packages are sandboxed, which means they have limited access to your system. This is a security feature, but it can cause some issues with certain features. You may have to grant additional permissions to the app using **[Flatseal](https://flathub.org/apps/com.github.tchx84.Flatseal)** (for Flatpak) or `snap connect` (for Snap).

### Using the AppImage

An AppImage is a single, portable file: mark it executable and run it. Because it is not integrated into your desktop environment on its own, we recommend managing it with a helper so you get a proper app icon and menu entry:

### Launching the app

After installing, launch **Deezer** from your applications menu, or from a terminal:

### Requirements

- Node.js (24+ recommended)
- npm (or yarn, see [FAQ](#i-want-to-use-yarn-instead-of-npm-is-it-possible))
- 7z (try installing `p7zip` and `p7zip-full`)
- make
- wget

### Setup

To build the project, you need to install the dependencies first:

```sh
make install_deps
```

> [!NOTE]
> You don't need to use `make install_deps` everytime you start a build, however you need to call it at least once. Everything should be generated in `artifacts/{arch}`.

### AppImage

To build the AppImage x64 image, you can use:

```sh
make build_appimage_x64
```

Artifacts will be generated in `artifacts/x64`.

> [!WARNING]
> You _may_ encounter a problem with the AppImage, where you are not able to login. This is a known issue, and is due to the way AppImage works. See [The browser doesn't launch the app after login, how do I log in manually?](#the-browser-doesnt-launch-the-app-after-login-how-do-i-log-in-manually) in the FAQ for how to complete the login manually.

> [!NOTE]
> Unlike the packaged builds, an AppImage is a standalone file that is not integrated into your desktop environment. For the app to show an icon and to handle deep links (such as `deezer://` login callbacks), you either need to use a launcher (like [Gear Lever](https://github.com/mijorus/gear-lever) or [AppImageLauncher](https://github.com/TheAssassin/AppImageLauncher)), or need to create and register a desktop entry manually:
>
> 1. Move the AppImage somewhere stable (e.g. `~/Applications/deezer-desktop.AppImage`) and make it executable with `chmod +x`.
> 2. Extract or download the app icon and place it in a standard location, for example `~/.local/share/icons/deezer-desktop.png`.
> 3. Create a desktop entry at `~/.local/share/applications/deezer-desktop.desktop` pointing `Exec=` to the AppImage (with `%u` so deep links are forwarded) and `Icon=` to the icon path, and declaring the `x-scheme-handler/deezer` MIME type so the app is registered as the `deezer://` handler
> 4. Reload the deep link / MIME associations so the system picks up the new handler, either by running:
>
> ```sh
> update-desktop-database ~/.local/share/applications
> xdg-mime default deezer-desktop.desktop x-scheme-handler/deezer
> ```
>
> or simply by reloading your user session (log out and back in). The app should now display its icon and correctly open `deezer://` deep links.

### rpm / deb / tar.xz

To generate the `rpm`/`deb`/`tar.xz` packages, you can use:

```sh
make build_{target}_{arch}
```

Example:

```sh
make build_rpm_arm64
```

Artifacts will be generated in `artifacts/{arch}`.

> Building can take a long time. Be patient.

If you generate the `tar.xz` package, you can run it directly by extracting to a directory, and calling `./deezer-desktop` from there.

### snap

To build the `snap` package, you can use:

```sh
make build_snap_{arch}
```

Then, you can install the package using:

```sh
sudo snap install ./artifacts/{arch}/deezer_desktop_{version}_{arch}.snap --dangerous
```

> [!NOTE]
> Snap packages require classic mode because of electron.
> Because of this, it is not able to use your usual browser.
> It will launch a clean instance of the browser, without extensions, settings, history, etc.

### flatpak

To build the `flatpak` package locally, you need to install `flatpak-builder` first.

```sh
sudo apt install flatpak-builder # Debian/Ubuntu
```

> [!NOTE]
> If you want to build the `arm64` version on an `x64` machine, you also need to install `qemu-user-static` and `binfmt-support` to enable cross-compilation.

Then, you can use:

```sh
make build_flatpak_{arch}
```

To install the generated flatpak, you can use:

```sh
flatpak install --user --reinstall ./artifacts/{arch}/deezer-desktop-{version}-{arch}.flatpak
```

To run it, you can use:

```sh
flatpak run dev.aunetx.deezer
```

## FAQ

### Why does this project exist?

Deezer can be used on Linux through the web interface, but it does not allow downloading songs for offline listening. This project allows you to use the official Deezer app on Linux, with the same features as on Windows (plus some Linux-specific features).

### Why are the patches published but not the app's source code? patches?

The source code of the Deezer app is not open-source. Reverse-engineering the app would be illegal and would violate the Deezer EULA. This project is a port of the official Windows app, and does not contain any reverse-engineered code, rather it bundles the official Windows app with a compatibility layer.

### I want to use yarn instead of npm, is it possible?

Yes, you can use yarn instead of npm. Execute the following command before building the project:

```sh
export PACKAGE_MANAGER=yarn
export PACKAGE_MANAGER_SUBDIR_ARG=--cwd
export PACKAGE_MANAGER_ADD_CMD=add
export PACKAGE_MANAGER_INSTALL_CMD=install
```

### After logging in, the callback redirects to the app but the window stays on the auth page

This is usually caused by stale site data from a previous session. Clear the app's old site data and log in again:

1. Launch the app from your terminal with devtools enabled:

```sh
DZ_DEVTOOLS=yes ./deezer-desktop # or any other way to launch the app
```

2. Open the devtools (ctrl+shift+i) and go to the Application tab.

3. In the left sidebar, under Storage, click on Clear storage.

Once the old data is cleared, kill the app completely (make sure it is not running in the background) and relaunch it. You should now be able to log in successfully.

### The browser doesn't launch the app after login, how do I log in manually?

When you log in, the browser is supposed to open a `deezer://autolog/<id>` callback URL that hands the session over to the app. If your browser fails to launch the app automatically (for example, the `deezer://` handler is not registered, which is common with AppImages), you can trigger the callback manually.

1. Complete the login flow in your browser. Copy the callback URL by right-clicking on the "Open Deezer" button and copying the link address. It should look like this:

```
deezer://autolog/<id>
```

2. Open that URL manually in your terminal. You can use `xdg-open`, `gio open` or pass it directly to the app executable. For example:

```
xdg-open deezer://www.deezer.com/autolog/<id>
```

If the plain `deezer://autolog/<id>` form does not work, use the full web URL variant instead: `deezer://www.deezer.com/autolog/<id>`.

This is especially common with the AppImage, since it is not integrated into your desktop environment and the `deezer://` handler is often not registered. In that case, you can pass the URL directly to the AppImage from its directory:

```sh
deezer-desktop-*.AppImage deezer://www.deezer.com/autolog/<id>
```

> Never share your `deezer://autolog/...` link with anyone, as it would allow them to log into your account without your consent. If you open an issue about this, make sure to remove your link first.

### How can I use my IME/virtual keyboard on Deezer under Wayland?

_IME: Input Method Editor. Usually used for languages like Chinese, Japanese, Korean, etc._

You should launch the app with the following arguments:

```sh
--enable-wayland-ime --ozone-platform-hint=auto --wayland-text-input-version=3
```
