# Claude Code Version Archiver

Permanent backup archive of Claude Code native installer releases. This project automatically monitors and preserves all Claude Code versions, providing a reliable fallback if official distributions become unavailable.

## Installing Claude Code

### ✅ Recommended: Official Installer

For the best experience, always use the official installer:

# Install latest stable version

# Install or switch to a specific version
curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash -s -- 2.0.67

# Or if you already have Claude Code installed, simply run:
claude install 2.0.67

# Install from specific channel

claude install stable
```

### 📦 Backup: Install from Archive

**Only use this if the official distribution is unavailable.** Download from the [Releases](../../releases) page:

```bash
# Download for your platform, make executable, and run installer
chmod +x claude-VERSION-PLATFORM
./claude-VERSION-PLATFORM install
```

Note: The official `claude install <version>` command is always preferred for switching versions.

## How It Works

1. **Version Detection**: Queries Claude Code's official distribution endpoint to get the latest stable version
2. **Duplicate Check**: Checks if the version is already archived (idempotent)
3. **Download**: Downloads all platform installers and the checksum manifest
4. **Verification**: Verifies SHA-256 checksums of all downloaded files
5. **Release Creation**: Creates a GitHub Release with all installers as assets
6. **Site Update**: GitHub Pages site automatically reflects new releases

## Setup

### Prerequisites

- GitHub account
- Node.js 20+ (for local testing)

### Initial Setup

1. **Fork or create this repository on GitHub**

2. **Enable GitHub Actions**
   - Go to repository Settings → Actions → General
   - Enable "Read and write permissions" for workflows

3. **Enable GitHub Pages**
   - Go to repository Settings → Pages
   - Source: Deploy from a branch
   - Branch: `main`, Folder: `/site`
   - Save

4. **Install dependencies** (for local development/testing)
   ```bash
   npm install
   ```

5. **Test the workflow**
   - Go to Actions tab
   - Select "Archive Claude Code Versions"
   - Click "Run workflow"
   - Choose "main" branch
   - Click "Run workflow" button

### Configuration

The workflow runs automatically every hour. You can modify the schedule in `.github/workflows/archive-versions.yml`:

Common cron patterns:
- `0 * * * *` - Every hour
- `0 */2 * * *` - Every 2 hours
- `0 0 * * *` - Daily at midnight
- `0 */6 * * *` - Every 6 hours

## Scripts

### Check Version
```bash
npm run check
```
Checks the current stable Claude Code version and whether it's already archived.

**Environment Variables:**
- `GITHUB_TOKEN`: GitHub API token (required)
- `GITHUB_REPOSITORY`: Repository in format `owner/repo` (required)

### Download Installers
```bash
npm run download -- <version>
```
Downloads all platform installers for the specified version.

**Example:**
```bash
npm run download -- 2.0.67
```

### Verify Checksums
```bash
npm run verify -- <version>
```
Verifies SHA-256 checksums of downloaded installers against the manifest.

**Example:**
```bash
npm run verify -- 2.0.67
```

### Create Release
```bash
npm run release -- <version>
```
Creates a GitHub Release and uploads all installers as assets.

**Environment Variables:**
- `GITHUB_TOKEN`: GitHub API token (required)
- `GITHUB_REPOSITORY`: Repository in format `owner/repo` (required)

**Example:**
```bash
export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_token
export GITHUB_REPOSITORY=owner/repo
npm run release -- 2.0.67
```

## Local Testing

1. **Install dependencies**
   ```bash
   npm install
   ```

2. **Set environment variables**
   ```bash
   export GITHUB_TOKEN=your_github_token
   export GITHUB_REPOSITORY=owner/repo
   ```

3. **Test version check**
   ```bash
   npm run check
   ```

4. **Test full workflow** (downloads ~200MB per version)
   ```bash
   VERSION=$(curl -s https://storage.googleapis.com/claude-code-dist-86c565f3-f756-42ad-8dfa-d59b1c096819/claude-code-releases/stable)
   npm run download -- $VERSION
   npm run verify -- $VERSION
   npm run release -- $VERSION
   ```

5. **Test static site locally**
   ```bash
   cd site
   python3 -m http.server 8000
   # Open http://localhost:8000
   ```

## API Endpoints

The project uses these Claude Code distribution endpoints:

- **Version**: `https://storage.googleapis.com/claude-code-dist-86c565f3-f756-42ad-8dfa-d59b1c096819/claude-code-releases/stable`
- **Manifest**: `{bucket}/{version}/manifest.json`
- **Installers**: `{bucket}/{version}/{platform}/claude[.exe]`

Platforms:
- `darwin-arm64`, `darwin-x64`
- `linux-arm64`, `linux-x64`, `linux-arm64-musl`, `linux-x64-musl`
- `win32-x64`

## Workflow Details

The GitHub Actions workflow consists of 4 jobs:

1. **check-new-version**: Checks if a new version needs archiving
2. **download-and-verify**: Downloads and verifies all installers
3. **create-release**: Creates GitHub Release with assets
4. **update-site**: Triggers GitHub Pages deployment

Jobs run conditionally - if no new version is found, the workflow exits early.

## Monitoring

- **Workflow Status**: Check the Actions tab for workflow run history
- **Storage Usage**: Monitor repository size (Settings → Code and automation)
- **Release Count**: View Releases tab to see all archived versions
- **Site Analytics**: Check GitHub Pages insights (if enabled)

## Troubleshooting

### Workflow fails at "Check for new version"
- Verify `GITHUB_TOKEN` has read/write permissions
- Check if GitHub API is accessible

### Download fails with checksum mismatch
- Claude Code manifest may have changed
- Check the manifest.json structure
- Verify platform names haven't changed

### GitHub Pages not updating
- Ensure Pages is enabled in repository settings
- Check if `/site` directory is committed to main branch
- Wait a few minutes for deployment

### Rate limiting issues
- GitHub Actions provides 1000 API requests/hour with `GITHUB_TOKEN`
- Hourly checks should stay well under this limit
- Check workflow logs for rate limit errors

## Storage Considerations

- Each Claude Code version is approximately 150-200 MB (all platforms)
- GitHub Releases has no hard storage limit for public repositories
- Archive approximately 100 versions before considering cleanup
- Implement cleanup script if needed (delete old releases)

## Security

- All downloads verified against official SHA-256 checksums
- No secrets stored in repository
- Uses GitHub's built-in `GITHUB_TOKEN`
- All scripts run in isolated GitHub Actions environment
