# AuroraKB

AuroraKB is a semantic search-based knowledge base system that provides persistent context storage for AI assistants through the MCP (Model Context Protocol).

## Features

- **Token Optimization (Two-Stage Retrieval)**: Reduces token consumption by ~90%
  - Returns brief summaries by default instead of full content
  - Agents review summaries to determine relevance
  - Fetch full content on-demand via `aurora_retrieve(document_id)`

## Requirements

- Python 3.12+
- PostgreSQL 17+ with pgvector extension
- OpenAI API key (for generating embeddings)

## Installation

### 1. Clone the Repository

### 2. Install Dependencies

Using `uv` for dependency management (recommended):

### 3. Setup PostgreSQL Database

Quick start with Docker (recommended):

### 4. Configure Claude Code MCP

Add the following configuration to your Claude Code MCP config file:

**Important Notes**:
- Replace `/absolute/path/to/AuroraKB` with the actual absolute path to the project
- Replace `sk-your-openai-api-key-here` with your OpenAI API key
- To use other embedding services, modify `OPENAI_BASE_URL` to the corresponding API endpoint

### 5. Start Claude Code

Restart Claude Code or reload the MCP configuration, and AuroraKB will start automatically!

## Usage

### Store Content (Ingest)

Use MCP tools through Claude Code chat:

### Handling Long Documents

AuroraKB has a content length limit per storage operation (~8000 tokens / ~32,000 characters). For longer documents, use one of these strategies:

**Strategy 1: Chunked Storage (Recommended for Technical Documents)**

## MCP Tools Reference

### aurora_ingest

Store content into AuroraKB with automatic semantic vector generation and project detection.

**Parameters**:
- `content` (required): Text content to store
  - Maximum length: ~8000 tokens (~32,000 characters)
  - Returns error and suggestions when limit exceeded
- `document_type` (required): Document type - must be one of:
  - `document`: General documents
  - `conversation`: Conversation records
  - `decision`: Decision records
  - `resolution`: Resolutions/solutions
  - `report`: Report documents
- `title` (required): Brief title or description
  - Used for search result display (two-stage retrieval optimization)
  - Should be concise (1-2 sentences) and descriptive
  - Agent knows the content best, so agent-provided titles are most accurate
- `namespace` (optional): Namespace for project isolation (default: "default")
- `source` (optional): Source/role identifier (e.g., 'qc', 'backend', 'frontend')
  - If not provided, uses AURORA_AGENT_ID from environment variable
  - Falls back to "unknown" if not configured
- `metadata` (optional): Additional metadata object
  - `author`: Author name
  - `tags`: Tag array
  - `url`: Associated URL
  - `parent_id`: For linking chunked documents
  - `chunk_index`: Chunk sequence number (for chunked storage)
  - `total_chunks`: Total number of chunks (for chunked storage)
- `working_directory` (optional, recommended): Current working directory path
  - Used to auto-detect project root for project-aware search
  - Pass your cwd here for automatic project association

**Project Detection**:
When `working_directory` is provided, AuroraKB automatically detects the project root by looking for markers like `.git`, `package.json`, `pyproject.toml`, etc. The detected `project_path` is stored with the document and returned in the response.

### aurora_search

Search content based on semantic similarity with optional project-aware boosting.

**Search Tips**:
For better recall, consider adding synonyms or related terms to your query before calling.
Example: `"Phase 4 plan"` → `"Phase 4 plan execution implementation 执行计划"`

**Parameters**:
- `query` (required): Search query text
  - For better recall, include synonyms or related terms
- `namespace` (optional): Limit to specific namespace
- `document_type` (optional): Filter by document type
- `limit` (optional): Number of results to return, default 10
- `threshold` (optional): Similarity threshold (0.0-1.0), default 0.2
- `metadata_filters` (optional): Metadata filters
  - `author`: Filter by author
  - `tags`: Filter by tags
  - `source`: Filter by source
- `current_project_path` (optional): Current project path for boosting same-project results
- `expand_query` (optional): Use LLM to auto-expand query (default: False)
  - Usually unnecessary as you can expand the query yourself with better context awareness
- `rerank` (optional): Rerank results via LLM (default: False)
  - Usually unnecessary as hybrid search with mathematical scoring is more reliable

**Project-Aware Search**:
When `current_project_path` is provided, documents from the same project receive a +0.15 similarity boost (capped at 1.0), making them rank higher in search results. This helps prioritize relevant context from your current project while still allowing cross-project search when needed.

**Response Fields**:
- `documents`: Array of matching documents
  - `project_path`: Detected project path (if available)
  - `is_same_project`: Boolean flag indicating if document is from current project
  - `similarity_score`: Similarity score (boosted if same project)
- `current_project`: Echo of the current_project_path parameter
- `total_found`: Number of results returned

### aurora_retrieve

Retrieve a specific document by document_id.

**Parameters**:
- `document_id` (required): Document ID
- `include_embedding` (optional): Whether to include vector data, default false

### aurora_update

Update an existing document in AuroraKB.

**Parameters**:
- `document_id` (required): Unique document identifier
- `content` (optional): New content (will regenerate embedding if provided)
- `metadata` (optional): New metadata (will merge with existing metadata)
- `document_type` (optional): New document type

**Behavior**:
- When `content` is updated, the embedding vector is automatically regenerated
- When `metadata` is updated, it merges with existing metadata (does not replace)
- Returns list of updated fields and new `updated_at` timestamp

**Example**:

### aurora_delete

Delete a document from AuroraKB.

**Parameters**:
- `document_id` (required): Unique document identifier

**Behavior**:
- Permanently deletes the document (cannot be undone)
- Returns deletion confirmation with deleted document info

**Example**:

```

### aurora_list

List documents from AuroraKB with structured filtering.

**Parameters**:
- `namespace` (optional): Filter by namespace
- `document_type` (optional): Filter by document type
- `source` (optional): Filter by source
- `project_path` (optional): Filter by project path
- `limit` (optional): Maximum number of results (default: 20, max: 100)
- `offset` (optional): Number of results to skip for pagination (default: 0)

**Behavior**:
- Returns brief document information (id, title, preview)
- All string filters are case-insensitive
- Results ordered by created_at (newest first)
- Supports pagination with limit and offset

**Example**:

## Advanced Configuration

### Using Custom Embedding Services

AuroraKB supports any OpenAI API-compatible embedding service:

### Enabling Query Expansion (Optional, Usually Unnecessary)

Query Expansion uses LLM to automatically expand search queries with related terms. However, this is **disabled by default** because:
- AI agents (Claude, GPT, Gemini) can expand queries themselves with full context awareness
- Agent-driven expansion is free and more accurate
- LLM-based expansion adds latency and cost

If you still want to enable LLM-based expansion:

### Enabling Token Optimization (Recommended)

Token Optimization uses LLM to automatically generate brief summaries at ingest time, reducing search result token consumption by ~90%. To enable:

**Configuration Notes**:
- Summarization is automatically enabled when `SUMMARIZATION_MODEL` is configured
- **Smart fallback chain**:
  1. Uses `SUMMARIZATION_BASE_URL` and `SUMMARIZATION_API_KEY` if provided
  2. Falls back to `QUERY_EXPANSION_BASE_URL` and `QUERY_EXPANSION_API_KEY` (both are LLM tasks)
  3. Finally falls back to `OPENAI_BASE_URL` and `OPENAI_API_KEY`
- Summaries are generated at ingest time (adds ~300ms latency to ingestion)
- Search returns summaries by default; use `include_full_content=True` for backward compatibility
- Summaries are cached for 1 hour to avoid re-summarizing identical content

**Backfilling Existing Documents**:

After enabling summarization, generate summaries for existing documents:

## Troubleshooting

### Database Connection Failed

Verify PostgreSQL is running:

## Search Optimization Status

AuroraKB has completed a comprehensive search optimization initiative:

### ✅ Phase 1: Hybrid Search (Completed)
- **Status**: Production-ready
- **Features**:
  - Combines semantic search (70%) with PostgreSQL full-text search (30%)
  - Position-aware keyword ranking using ts_rank_cd
  - GIN index for efficient full-text search
  - Automatic query optimization for short queries
- **Impact**: Significantly improved search accuracy, especially for keyword-heavy queries

### ✅ Phase 2: Query Expansion (Completed, Disabled by Default)
- **Status**: Production-ready, but disabled by default
- **Change**: After testing, we found that AI agents (Claude, GPT, Gemini) can expand queries themselves with better context awareness
- **Features**:
  - LLM-based query expansion with related terms (optional)
  - Smart caching (1-hour TTL) to reduce latency and cost
  - Configurable with any OpenAI-compatible API
- **Recommendation**: Let agents expand queries themselves instead of using LLM-based expansion
  - Agents have full conversation context
  - Agents can adjust based on search results
  - Zero extra cost

### ❌ Phase 3: LLM Reranking (Deprecated)
- **Status**: Implemented but disabled by default
- **Reason**: Testing revealed that LLM-based reranking introduces biases that reduce accuracy:
  - **Length bias**: LLMs favor longer, more "comprehensive" documents over focused ones
  - **Semantic confusion**: LLMs may conflate similar concepts (e.g., "Implementation Timeline" vs "Execution Plan")
  - **Information overload**: Processing 20+ documents with 600+ characters each degrades judgment quality
- **Conclusion**: Hybrid search with mathematical scoring (embedding + keyword) is more reliable than subjective LLM judgment
- **Future**: May revisit with specialized reranking models (Cohere Rerank, Jina Reranker) if needed

**Current Recommendation**: Use Hybrid Search for optimal results. Both Query Expansion and Reranking are disabled by default - agents can expand queries themselves with better context awareness, and hybrid search with mathematical scoring is more reliable than LLM subjective judgment.
