# Installation Guide

1. Get the code

git clone https://github.com/larsiusprime/crashdumper

Downloads the entire project code from GitHub to your computer.

cd crashdumper

Moves into the project folder you just downloaded.

2. Node.js

Easy Recommended

Prerequisites

Git Needed to download the project code from GitHub.
Node.js Node.js must be installed to use npm. The LTS version is recommended.

⚠️ This is a large repository, so this method may point to an internal sub-package rather than the actual core product. Check the full README as well.

cd servers/nodejs/bin

This project's files live in a subfolder, so move into it first.

npm install

Downloads and installs the libraries listed in package.json.

npm start

Starts the development/run server.

✅ After running the command, open the address shown in the terminal (usually something like http://localhost:3000) in your browser.

A cross-platform automated crash report generator/sender for Haxe/OpenFL apps.

Setup
===========

1. Install crashdumper (coming soon to haxelib, just github for now).
     
     Command Line:
     ````

  2. Include crashdumper in your project.xml:  
     
     ````xml

  3. Optionally, set one or both of these haxedefs in your project.xml (for cpp targets)  
     
     ````xml
     <haxedef name="HXCPP_STACK_LINE" />  
	 <haxedef name="HXCPP_STACK_TRACE"/>  
     ````
     On flash target, stack traces will only be generated in a debug player.

If you don't set the haxedefs, you'll still get a crashdump with a system profile, error message and some other useful info, but you won't get line numbers and a backtrace of the method call stack that led up to the error.

Usage
===========

You may optionally also cache data files (such as a user/player's save game data and/or application config data) at that moment, and the crash report will include verbatim copies of those save files. You can use this to generate a crash report that includes as much data as possible about the user's starting conditions.

Server-Side
============

CrashDumper can be hooked up to a server-side listener that process and/or stores crash dumps. We are happy to receive any such implementations as pull requests, [you can find them all here](https://github.com/larsiusprime/crashdumper/tree/master/servers).

We specifically recommend **[Crashdump Browser](https://github.com/larsiusprime/crashdumper/tree/master/servers/crashdumpbrowser)**.

Paths
============

By default will write to your program's application storage directory (`SystemPath.applicationStorageDirectory`), under `/logs/errors/<SESSION_ID>`.
You can supply your own path, of course.

Performance
============

Using crashdumper probably comes with a small hit to performance, but it should be much less than the difference between debug and release mode.

`HXCPP_STACK_TRACE` and `HXCPP_STACK_LINE` both come with a small hit to performance, but if you're worried about optimization, `LINE` is the most expensive, `TRACE` is relatively cheap.

We still need to run performance tests to see what the actual overheads are. We would be more than happy to welcome your benchmark results with crashdumper!
