**Native Cocoa browser for Mac OS X Tiger/Leopard with built-in TLS 1.2**

PocketFox is a lightweight web browser that brings modern HTTPS to PowerPC Macs. Instead of relying on Tiger's broken OpenSSL, it embeds mbedTLS 2.28 LTS directly.

## Features

- Native Cocoa UI (Objective-C)
- TLS 1.2 with ChaCha20-Poly1305 (embedded mbedTLS 2.28 — bypasses Tiger's broken OpenSSL)

- **Text-mode HTML rendering** — strips script/style, converts block elements to
  readable layout, decodes named **and** numeric (`&#233;`, `&#x2764;`) entities
  to UTF-8, and surfaces links inline (`text <url>`) so they're never invisible
- History, bookmarks, title extraction
- Works on Tiger (10.4) and Leopard (10.5)
- PowerPC G4/G5 optimized

## Rendering

PocketFox renders pages as clean, readable **text** (lynx-style), not full
graphical layout — the right trade for a lightweight browser on a G4. The
renderer is a standalone, unit-tested C module (`pocketfox_render.c`); run its
tests on any host:

### Prerequisites

1. **Xcode 2.5** (Tiger) or **Xcode 3.1** (Leopard)
2. **mbedTLS 2.28** compiled for PowerPC

### Build mbedTLS First

## Certificate Verification

PocketFox **verifies server certificates by default** against an embedded
copy of Mozilla's CA root bundle (121 roots, via
[curl.se/ca](https://curl.se/docs/caextract.html)), so HTTPS on Tiger means
the same thing it does on a modern machine. Tiger's own root store is two
decades stale — PocketFox doesn't use it.

- **Embedded bundle**: `pocketfox_cacert.h`, regenerated weekly by CI from
  curl.se (SHA-256 verified). Run `sh tools/update_cacert.sh` to refresh
  manually.
- **User override**: drop a newer `cacert.pem` into
  `~/Library/Application Support/PocketFox/` and it's used instead of the
  embedded copy.
- **Escape hatch**: `wget -k` / `--insecure`, or
  `pocketfox_ssl_set_insecure(1)` in code — verification off, like
  `curl -k`. Off by default, loudly warned.

**Wrong clock = failed verification.** Vintage Macs with dead PRAM
batteries reset their date, which makes every certificate look not-yet-valid.
If every site fails with a certificate date error, set the clock in
System Preferences first.

## Why PocketFox?

Tiger's built-in OpenSSL (0.9.7) and Safari can't connect to modern HTTPS sites. Rather than trying to patch the system, PocketFox embeds modern TLS directly.
