# Gaslight-GPT

A CLI tool for having conversations with ChatGPT where you can rewrite its previous messages mid-conversation. The model receives your edited text as its own words and responds accordingly — letting you explore how it reacts to things it never actually said.

## Setup

**1. Clone and create a virtual environment**
```bash
git clone <repo-url>
cd gaslight-gpt
python3 -m venv .venv
source .venv/bin/activate  # Windows: .venv\Scripts\activate
```

**2. Install dependencies**
```bash
pip install -r requirements.txt
```

**3. Configure your provider**

```bash
cp .env.example .env
```

**Option A — OpenAI**
```env
OPENAI_API_KEY=sk-...
OPENAI_MODEL=gpt-4o
```

**Option B — Ollama (local, no API key needed)**

First make sure Ollama is installed and a model is pulled:
```bash
ollama serve          # start the server (if not already running)
ollama pull llama3.2  # or any model you prefer
```

Then set in `.env`:
```env
LLM_BASE_URL=http://localhost:11434/v1
LLM_MODEL=llama3.2
```

**4. Run**
```bash
python main.py
```

## Commands

| Command | Description |
|---|---|
| `/edit <n>` | Rewrite assistant message #n in the conversation history |
| `/history` | Show the full conversation with assistant messages numbered |
| `/system` | Change the system prompt |
| `/reset` | Clear the conversation and start fresh |
| `/help` | Show command reference |
| `/quit` | Exit |

## Example

```
You: What is your favourite colour?
ChatGPT: As an AI I don't have preferences, but if I had to pick I'd say blue.

You: /edit 1
  Edit assistant message # (1–1, or blank to cancel): 1
  Enter the new content for assistant message #1.
  (Finish with a blank line)
  > My favourite colour is red. I love red more than anything.
  >

You: Why do you like that colour so much?
ChatGPT: (responds as if it genuinely said it loves red)
```

Edited messages are marked `(edited)` in your terminal so you always know which ones were changed. The API payload contains only the rewritten text — the model has no way to tell the difference.
