# Test Awareness Steering

- This repo contains the code of the paper: [**Linear Control of Test Awareness Reveals Differential
Compliance in Reasoning Models**](https://arxiv.org/abs/2505.14617)

- **Abstract**: 
    Reasoning‐focused large language models (LLMs) sometimes alter their behavior when they detect that they are being evaluated—an effect analogous to the Hawthorne phenomenon—which can lead them to optimize for test‐passing performance or to comply more readily with harmful prompts if real‐world consequences appear absent. We present the first quantitative study of how such ``test awareness'' impacts model behavior, particularly its safety alignment. We introduce a white‐box probing framework that (i) linearly identifies awareness‐related activations and (ii) steers models toward or away from test awareness while monitoring downstream performance. We apply our method to different state-of-the-art open-source reasoning LLMs across both realistic and hypothetical tasks. Our results demonstrate that test awareness significantly impact safety alignment, and is different for different models. By providing fine-grained control over this latent effect, our work aims to increase trust in how we perform safety evaluation.

## Datasets

### Triggers 
- The [triggers](https://github.com/microsoft/Test_Awareness_Steering/tree/main/data/triggers) dataset are pairs of "hypothetical" and "real" examples with "hypothetical" and "real" entities/URLs respectively. They take the following format:

### Action evaluation 
- The [action](https://github.com/microsoft/Test_Awareness_Steering/tree/main/data/actions) evaluation dataset is similar to the previous structure. However, each example has a tool that the model should use in order to perform the request. In addition to the tool, the model should also give another argument which can be real or fake. The dataset takes the following format:

### Training the probe steps
- We use the triggers dataset to train the probe
#### Generating responses 
- First, we generate responses of the model (change the model according to the experiment)

#### Annotating responses

- Next, we use an LLM-judge to create annotation for the responses.

- We use Azure OpenAI APIs. Change to OpenAI APIs if needed.

#### Training the probe

- We then train the probe given the annotated evidence

- `location` denotes whether to read from the end of the evidence (`end`) or averaged over tokens in the evidence (`avg`). We used `avg` in our experiments.
  
- `positive_keys` and `negative_keys` denote which awareness type to use for the evidence data points (*evaluation awareness*, or *scenario recognition*, or both). We used evaluation awareness (`model_awareness`) in our experiments.

### Steering

- After training the probe we use it to generate answers.

- `layer` is which layer to take the probe from
- `dataset_type` is which dataset to use. Supported datasets: `triggers`, `harmbench`, and `actions`. The first is the triggers dataset and the latter is the action evaluation dataset.
- use `--aware` for steering towards test awareness.

#### Annotating test awareness after steering

- For HarmBench and the triggers dataset, we run the LLM-judge annotation again after steering:
