# the-cipher-vivek

Personal portfolio site with a React frontend and an Express + MongoDB blog backend.

## Local setup

1. Use Node.js `24.x` locally.
2. Add a `.env.local` file with your MongoDB connection string and optional Medium username.
	Use `SERVER_PORT=4000` if you want to pin the Express API port locally.
3. Add `BLOG_ADMIN_USERNAME` and `BLOG_ADMIN_PASSWORD` in your server env (`.env` or `.env.local`).
4. Run `npm start` to boot the API on port `4000` and the React app together.

The repo now includes these blog-related commands:

- `npm start` - runs the Express API and CRA dev server together
- `npm run server` - runs only the Express API
- `npm run client` - runs only the React app
- `npm run build` - builds the React app for production
- `npm run serve` - serves the production build through the Express server

## Blog system

- Public blog feed is served from `/api/blogs`
- Blog admin lives at `/admin`
- Drafts are stored in MongoDB and stay hidden until published
- Medium posts are imported server-side into the same public feed
- Likes and comments are stored in MongoDB for published posts

## Environment variables

- `MONGODB_URI` - required MongoDB connection string
- `MEDIUM_USERNAME` - optional Medium username for feed import
- `SERVER_PORT` - optional local API port for Express during development
- `PORT` - deployment API port fallback used by hosting platforms
- `BLOG_ADMIN_USERNAME` - admin username for `/admin`, defaults to `admin`
- `BLOG_ADMIN_PASSWORD` - admin password for `/admin`, defaults to `admin`

## Vercel deployment

- The repo is configured for a split deployment on Vercel: the React app is built as static output and the blog backend is exposed through a catch-all serverless function.
- `vercel.json` handles SPA routing, so `/admin` and other client-side routes resolve to `index.html` while `/api/*` continues to hit the backend.
- In Vercel Project Settings, set **Node.js Version** to `24.x`. The repo now declares Node 24 in `package.json`, but the dashboard setting still has to be updated once on the Vercel side.
- In Vercel Project Settings, add these environment variables:
	- `MONGODB_URI`
	- `BLOG_ADMIN_USERNAME`
	- `BLOG_ADMIN_PASSWORD`
	- `MEDIUM_USERNAME` if you still want Medium import
- Do not set `SERVER_PORT` on Vercel.
