# Gmail cookie stealing research

## Goal
---------
Figure out if cookies can be reused on different computers, if so what are the requirements for that, and what are the exact cookies you need + create a simple script

---------
The whole research took 2 days (+-)
 - 22.7.2022 - 23.7.2022

Computer 1 (MacBook Air):
 - Firefox (102.0)

## Setup Notes

I launched a t2.medium EC2 machine in AWS eu-central-1 Frankfurt
 - Windows Server 2019
    - Installed:
        - Firefox
        - VSCode
        - BurpSuite

## Research Results
---------

Ideas on stuff to research:
 - Use burpsuite to copy the cookies ✅
	- Works even from a different country and different IP

- **Do any notifications get sent** ❌
    - **I didn't get any notification to my phone, or to my Gmail window, I expected to get a notification of a new PC on my account, to be alerted in some way that someone new is in my account or that maybe something is wrong**

- What cookies are necessary to read mails ✅
    - To read/send mails you only need 4 cookies
        ```

- What if the `User-Agent` is different ✅
    - On `Computer 1` the `User-Agent` is:
        ```

        ```
    - On `Computer 2` the `User-Agent` is:
        ```

        I also tried using chromium:

     - Still works, so the user agent doesn't really matter

- What if the time is different ✅ 
    - The time on `Computer 1` is:

    - Still works, so the timezone doesn't really matter

- Will using a python script with the necessary cookies work ✅
    - I asked this question because I wasn't sure if it will append the other cookies like `COMPASS`, but it works either way, [this is the script](#A-Quick-Script).

- Use the cookies through TOR (The Onion Routing)❓

- Will the cookies work after 2 days ✅
    - I just ran the script I made, and it still worked, which means the cookies are still good.

- Will closing the Gmail window disconnect the session? ❌
    - Well, the above question answers this, I used a cookie that is 2 days old, with Gmail closed, so closing the window doesnt disconnect the session

- Will logging out disconnect the session ✅
    - When logging out, Gmail disconnects the session.

- Local Storage & Indexed DB ❌
    - What does it contain when using the browser:
        - Local Storage:
            - initialLoadStartCount - Just a number, doesn't really matter
            - PeopleStackExperiments - Not sure what that is, a big json array with values I don't understand and didn't research further
        - Indexed DB:
            - StoredCacheState - A cache state that could be returned to, so you won't make more requests
            - StoredCacheHitCounters - Stores a URL that is accessed a lot in the cache
        - So in general, it doesn't look that interesting.
    - What does it contain after closing the browser:
        - The exact same thing as when using the browser live, so nothing interesting.

- How does the `Remember Me` feature work ❌
    - The feature doesn't exist, it used to, but now Google manages the state in a way that doesn't require this feature.

- Will `cookies.sqlite` work between computers (Different OS's) ✅
    - I took the `cookies.sqlite` file from my MacBook and transfered it to the Windows Server, and it worked, **I got access to way more than just my Gmail, as you get all of the cookies from all of the websites.**

### Just copying the cookies

I used burp on `Computer 1`, and surfed to `https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox` and one of the requests was:

I wanted to take those cookies, and use them on `Computer 2`, so at first I just intercepted all the traffic on `Computer 2` and surfed to the same URL, then I just copy pasted those cookies in a couple requests and saw it worked.

But I didn't want to keep copy pasting the cookies, so I looked around and saw that burp has a feature called `Session Handling Rules`, and with that feature I could add a rule that applies only to the `Proxy` and will add those cookies to every request made to `https://mail.google.com`.

Then I just surfed to `https://mail.google.com/mail/u/0/#inbox` and it worked, no more manual changes.

Checking on a different browser it still works, changing my IP and it still works, so it seems like Google doesn't really care about what computer you use, where are you from, etc... if you have the cookies, you win.

### What cookies really matter?

So now that I don't have to manualy change the cookies this task should be easy.
I just started ticking off cookies in the rule I set, and tried accesing an email, if it worked, then the cookie wasn't necessary.

Doing this I found that only 2 cookies are necassary to read mails:

But then I realised a mistake I made, I didn't clear my cookies after every request, so some cookies got stored as a result of my test, after I realised this I found out that the cookies I really need are:

HSID=XXXX;
SSID=XXXX;
OSID=XXXX;
```

When you make a request, just append those cookies, and it should work.
