# CHIP-8-Arduino
A CHIP-8 Emulator that runs on an Arduino Nano.

The Arduino Uno/Nano only has 2 KiB of RAM which is not enough to fit the 4 KiB that is specified for a CHIP8 machine, let alone the RAM that the emulator and the libraries need.
Therefore, an external SRAM module ([23LCV512](http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/25157A.pdf)) was used to extend the available memory by 512 Kbit (64 KiB).

Additionally, an external EEPROM module ([24AA256](http://ww1.microchip.com/downloads/en/DeviceDoc/21203M.pdf)) with 32 KiB is included to store several CHIP8 roms.
The display is an [SSD1306](https://cdn-shop.adafruit.com/datasheets/SSD1306.pdf) OLED module with a resolution of 128x64 pixels.
This is enough to display the 64x32 screen of the CHIP8 module with 2x2 pixels.
In order to save RAM space and ease integration, the corresponding [library](https://github.com/adafruit/Adafruit_SSD1306) was slimmed down and modified.

The SRAM module communicates over the SPI bus, the OLED and the EEPROM modules over the I2C bus.

# Requirements
The Arduino version used for this project is 1.8.5, which was installed from the [Arduino](https://www.arduino.cc/en/Main/Software) website.

[arduino-mk](https://github.com/sudar/Arduino-Makefile) was used to build and load the project onto an Arduino Nano.
All used libraries are included in the lib/ folder.
