## ⚡ Quick Start

### 1. Prerequisites
- Node.js v16+
- MongoDB running locally (`mongod`) or a MongoDB Atlas URI

### 2. Backend Setup

```bash
cd backend
cp .env.example .env
# Edit .env and set MONGODB_URI and JWT_SECRET
npm install
npm run seed     # Populate demo data
npm run dev      # Start on http://localhost:5000
```

### 3. Frontend Setup

```bash
cd frontend
npm install
# Create .env.local with:
# NEXT_PUBLIC_API_URL=http://localhost:5000/api
npm run dev      # Start on http://localhost:3000
```

## 🔐 Authentication Flow (JWT)

1. User registers/logs in → backend validates credentials
2. Backend signs a **JWT** with `jsonwebtoken` using `JWT_SECRET`
3. Token is returned and stored in a **secure cookie** (via `js-cookie`)
4. Axios interceptor **attaches `Bearer <token>`** to every API request
5. Backend `protect` middleware **verifies the JWT** on protected routes
6. If token is invalid/expired → interceptor clears cookie and redirects to login

## 🧠 Interview Talking Points

### Architecture Decisions
- **Context API over Redux** — App state is scoped (auth + cart); Redux overhead not justified
- **JWT in cookies** — Persistent across refreshes; interceptor handles token attachment automatically
- **Mongoose virtuals & hooks** — `pre('save')` for password hashing; `post('save')` triggers rating recalculation on reviews
- **Controller/Route separation** — Clean separation of concerns; easy to test controllers independently

### Scalability Considerations
- Database indexes on restaurants for full-text search (`$text`)
- Pagination on all list endpoints
- Cart conflict detection (cross-restaurant)
- Role-based middleware keeps authorization centralized
